Today we’d like to introduce you to Jelani Ingram.
Jelani, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I’m not nearly the best Ingram. I come from a family of entrepreneurs. Examples: My uncle Jon Ingram owned the first black-owned tuxedo shop in Dallas, Texas ‘Mr. Formal Tuxedo’ and my father, Jesse Ingram, PhD have owned a Psychology practice for 40+ years. During the 1980s, my dad decided to lay down roots in Desoto, Texas. I graduated from Desoto High School and went on to earn a BS in Psychology from Morehouse College. From Atlanta, I went to Houston for 10 years, where I went to medical school and residency and met my wife, Samantha Ingram, while she was studying to be an early childhood educator.
Once my chief residency year was complete, we moved to Dallas so I could dive directly into private practice, and I built a 4,000-patient clinic in 2 years specializing in family medicine, urgent care, and occupational medicine in 2015. I quickly understood the complexities and gaps in our healthcare system while managing diverse patient populations. Which lead me to innovative strategies to deliver patient care more efficiently. One of those strategies became filming virtual reality content for clinical practice. And another is understanding how healthcare and blockchain technology synergize. I also worked with the Teladoc Health early, years before the pandemic started, and contributed to their success as a now publicly traded company. I understand the technological shift happening in healthcare delivery.
Most recently, I served as the first Market Medical Director for Crossover Health on the Amazon.com account, successfully growing 5 clinics in DFW.
I have appeared on DocTalk360, Fit-in-15, Doctor Radio, NBC, and Fox News. I have also authored several books titled “Fighting with Your Eyes Closed: A First Year’s Guide to Medical School,” “Exercise & Muscle Recovery,” “Couch to Confidence,” “Tame your Anxiety with Meditation” and “New Block City: The Essential Guide to Blockchain for Beginners.”
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
I don’t think roads are meant to be smooth. Part of developing yourself as a person is the obstacles that have to be overcome.
Innovating in a traditional system like medicine/healthcare is difficult. Building the right team to move faster would be the biggest struggle.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I taught myself how to film and edit in virtual reality by watching YouTube videos. I would sometimes be up until 3 or 4 am, frequently my wife would make me stop editing at night,
Antonio Rozier and I created and starred in the first-ever virtual reality doctor’s show
The virtual reality meditation videos I made in 2018 are still being watched daily today.
What does success mean to you?
Hitting my daily goals, because I’ve already set the path to happiness
