Today we’d like to introduce you to Greg McCarthy.
About 15 years ago, Greg (the lawyer) and Curt (the logistics guy) were hanging out with friends, enjoying a cold beer and discussing family, business, and life its own self. With very little introduction, Curt announced that the assembled group of friends should open a brewpub in their hometown, to serve their friends and neighbors along with the many tourists who visit the area. Everyone agreed, then finished their beers and returned to making a living and raising a family.
In early 2015, Curt and Greg and their friends were again enjoying a cold beverage together (a theme has now appeared) when Greg let everyone know that he had decided to open a craft brewery in Arlington, so that their hometown could take part in the craft beer revolution and participate in the revitalization of downtown Arlington. Curt simply couldn’t resist. Thanks to a recovering attorney and a retired logistics guy. Of course, they never thought they’d have seven beers in cans, including a gluten-removed lager, or that they would have made 21 different beers in the first 21 months.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Challenges and struggles are present in every new business, and ours is no exception. Neither of us had experience in the beer business, so bringing on someone like Henryk Orlik, with his German Master Brewer training and 30+ years of experience in the business, was crucial. Delays in the opening, overcoming regulatory obstacles and seeing the competitive reality of the craft beer business have kept us plenty busy.
Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Legal Draft Beer Co. – what should we know?
We started Legal Draft Beer Company because we thought Texas simply didn’t have enough great craft beer. Our beers are brewed with care and attention to detail by our German Master Brewer with the finest ingredients available and are meant to stand up with the best beers in our state, our nation, and the world. We’re known for having craft beer that’s drinkable and approachable, in addition to creative and more crafty options. Beyond the beer, we’re proud of the role we take in our community.
Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
At Legal Draft, we pay attention to the details. We insist on high-quality ingredients and great processes for making our beer. We try to understand the needs and the interests of our retail partners. Most of all, we try to keep ourselves up to date with what the market wants.
