Life & Work with Ginger Walker

Today we’d like to introduce you to Ginger Walker.

Ginger Walker

Hi Ginger, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I was born and raised in Dallas but have been in Fort Worth for over twenty years where my husband. Rob and I have raised our family and met the most wonderful people! I have always been an artist and a creative, but after receiving my art degree from Baylor, I worked in pharmaceutical sales, mainly because I needed insurance, and the pay was great. I had kids very close together, and I didn’t start painting again until about 10 years ago when we built a house and went through the loss of a close friend. I was at a stage where I wanted original art for the house, but I couldn’t afford the art I wanted, so as they say…necessity is the mother of invention.

I started in my garage and eventually started selling to friends and family, which blossomed into a full-time career. I opened the Galleywinter Gallery with my close friend Pat Green in 2017 and have been in my own studio/gallery since 2021. I love having a space to create every day, and I host events and classes at my studio.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back, would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
What is a smooth road? Just kidding… I have been juggling raising Kids and finding pockets of time to paint the last 10 years. In the past few years, my husband and I lost three of the four of our parents, which has been very difficult. Oh yes, and add in the Covid years, trying to work when kids were not in school and caring for sick parents was one of the biggest challenges I’ve ever had, but all the time, I had my art as a therapy and a refuge.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I love color! When I was in school, I painted traditional landscapes and people and as I got older, I fell in love with abstract art and especially color field painting. I started painting with inks when my dad was first diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in 2017 to honor him. He was the most colorful person in the room, no matter where he was, and he worked in the printing industry his whole life. I’m very proud he got to see some of my success as an artist before he passed. I am just so thankful I get to create art every day. I am about to be an empty nester, and my husband recently asked me what I want to do, and I said, “I’m doing it.” I’m hoping people see me and my work as unique and something I put my whole heart into. I

What was your favorite childhood memory?
I have a distinct memory of painting in my mom’s wallpapered yellow tulip kitchen. There were big windows with sun beaming in on me where she had set up an easel for me to paint. I think it was probably finger paints and craft paper, but I was so happy.
