Today we’d like to introduce you to Holly Lockett.
Hi Holly, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
Believe it or not, I didn’t set out to be a therapist. Originally, I was going to go to law school. I had just taken the LSAT when I got the call that my brother died. His death destroyed our family because of the grief and trauma that we all suffered. I watched my family, mainly my niece, get horrible care. Many therapists/professionals are not comfortable working with death, dying, and grief, so they can’t speak the language that grieving people need to hear. I complained a lot about it until one day, my friend, who is now my business partner, basically told me to put up or shut up. I changed directions, and now I work with complex grief, trauma, and attachment/adoption issues. I absolutely love my job and am honored to help people walk through their own personal hell.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Overall, I would say it has been a pretty smooth road. I am surrounded by mentors and advisors who have helped me get to where I am and who have supported me, taught me, and encouraged me. I think anytime you decide to open a business, it can be challenging. We have learned how to screen and hire the right people. We have amazing support in the community, and our number one goal is to provide the best care possible.
Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Frisco Counseling and Wellness?
At Frisco Counseling and Wellness our intention is that when someone calls in, we will have a specialist for what they need. We have always wanted to be a one-stop shop, which is why we have 13 therapists, coaches, and a psychiatrist. We are constantly learning and adding new modalities to our practice. We recently added Ketamine assisted Psychotherapy to the list of things we offer. We always want to be offering everything possible to help people heal. My business partner and I started the practice 15 years ago and it has been such an honor being able to serve people throughout DFW.
Can you talk to us about how you think about risk?
If I am being honest, my business partner is the real risk-taker. I tend to overthink, and he leaps. Luckily, his leaps have all been (or at least for the most part) good risks. I think anytime you decide to go out on your own as a solo practitioner or starting a practice it is a huge leap of faith. That said, when you are great at what you do and have the confidence to jump, I say do it. It was the best decision I have made professionally.
