Rising Stars: Meet Aaron Bucy

Today we’d like to introduce you to Aaron Bucy

Hi Aaron, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.

I spent several years in law enforcement before getting into private investigations. Private investigations quickly became my full-time job, and I had to learn how to establish a small business, along with systems to make it run. During this time, I also began publishing books. I ended up publishing about three dozen books for authors under a vanity publishing label. I published my own book in 2016, which became the number one book in its category on Amazon. I continued to grow my private investigation business as a contractor, ultimately opening my own agency in 2020. I continued to develop other businesses, including commercial vinyl, laser engraving, and coffee roasting- beginning with direct sales and culminating with a physical store. In 2022, I was offered a job as a senior investigator with a federal government agency, but the world of small business and entrepreneurship would bring me back to my hometown of Sherman in 2023. I was given the opportunity to be the Executive Director of the Sherman Symphony Orchestra, a nonprofit organization that has existed for 60 years. The skills and knowledge I gained developing my own small businesses have been a valuable asset to growing the Sherman Symphony and building awareness in the community of the organization

Aaron J. Bucy is an accomplished executive, skilled in multiple disciplines ranging from law enforcement and investigations to executive protection and business management. As the current Executive Director of the Sherman Symphony Orchestra, Aaron has demonstrated his leadership by spearheading initiatives like the lifetime concert partnership with the Texoma Hero Organization and helping to get his organization nominated for “Non-Profit Organization of the Year 2023” by the Chamber of Commerce. Currently pioneering a digital group, including an internet radio station (www.bucydigital.com), Aaron is exploring ways to give local business and non-profit organizations wide-ranging exposure at minimal to zero cost to the entities.

Aaron’s career began in public safety, where he served as a police officer and sergeant in multiple Texas cities before transitioning into private investigation and security. Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?

The road hasn’t been smooth, but not necessarily rough either. The most difficult part of small business and being involved, and growing the opportunities that come along is the amount of time that you have to put in personally. You have all these ideas and things that you want to do and accomplish, but you run out of hours in the day. The only way to really grow and achieve most goals is to scale up your staff and add people- which obviously costs money, so sometimes you find yourself between a rock and a hard place because the budgets are always tight. But you can see that if you spend a little more money than what you currently are, you could potentially make more money than you currently are. So, it gets to be a challenge to decide when to jump in — jump into the old cliche of “spend money to make money.” Trying to do everything yourself, from managing the business, the books, payments, and collections to actually doing the tasks that you’re being hired to do, will really exhaust you and burn you out fast. At some point, you really do hit a ceiling where you cannot take on any more work, and your earning potential is really capped because you just physically can’t accomplish anymore each day.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?

Currently, I am the Executive Director of the Sherman Symphony Orchestra. I am the first full-time employee the organization has had in its 60 years of existence. I was hired to bring awareness about the organization and help it match the growth of the area. In my first full season with the SSO, I have been able to keep the symphony on budget, added more than 15 new sponsors and advertisers, and have begun morphing the concerts into full event experiences. I featured an art gallery and red carpet at the Winter Concert and helped bring out a record crowd to the April concert, with more than 800 people attending a concert that historically averages 350-400 people. The SSO was also nominated for “Non-Profit Organization of the Year” at the Chamber of Commerce.

While the Sherman Symphony is my priority, I still own the Bucy Group of Companies, which provides legal services of all types to private citizens and law firms. This year, I have started a new venture called Bucy Digital, which is a fully licensed streaming radio platform. The mission of this project is to provide a platform and low-cost entry point for Non-Profit organizations and local businesses to develop some advertising assets. I have already secured a nationally syndicated radio show that runs each week, and we have agreements with some podcasts that let us replay their episodes, thus giving their advertisers more exposure. Bucy Digital is largely playing POP/Top 40 programming, but we do have some niche’ programming built in as well– check out the schedule at BucyDigital.com!

Last year I picked up the colored pencils and paintbrushes for the first time in about 30 years. I began painting on canvas and entered some art shows. I had an oil on canvas painting that received an Honorable Mention at the Texas State Fair and another oil on canvas that received an “Art That Speaks To Me” award at a local show. I had several offers to purchase some of my paintings and took on a commissioned work for the first time. I plan to continue building my artist portfolio. Last year, I found myself on camera for some local commercials and then on stage with Sherman Community Players- both of which were firsts for me. I have carried on that experience and this year I was selected as a spokesperson for a national electronics brand, having shot six (6) commercials to date.

I currently serve on two (2) non-profit boards, Murdered Missing Indigenous Women-Chata, where I serve as the first and only male on the board, and the North Texas Youth Connection. I have been appointed by the City Council to the Main Street Advisory Board, where I serve as the Secretary, and the Animal Control Advisory Board, where I serve as the Board Chair.

I am proud to be known as someone who people can come to as a source of information or for guidance. Being involved with such a wide variety of topics has given me many perspectives and many networking contacts. I am proud to be someone who gets out in the world and tries things. I continue to try and learn new skills and bodies of knowledge all the time.

So maybe we end on discussing what matters most to you and why?

What matters most to me is being able to provide stability to my family. I enjoy being involved in so many different things, and it has opened doors to opportunities that have allowed us to have lots of fun experiences while still making sure we keep the lights on at home. Being a good example for my teenage daughter is important. I don’t necessarily want to be her role model, but I do want her to see the value in meeting people and getting involved in things that you’re interested in that will take you out of the house and force you to learn. I hope that when she grows up, she will remember all the experiences that she had when she was with me and try to emulate that for herself by creating a life that is full of her own personal interests. Generally speaking, it is important to me to just be doing something.
