Today we’d like to introduce you to Kate White
Hi Kate, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I’m Kate, a Dallas-based mom of four and founder of Haven Hat Co. You can usually find me sporting a casual outfit and my favorite trucker hat – that’s my everyday style in a nutshell. I’ve tried tons of different hat brands over the years, but each one had its own issue. The fit was off, the design was meh, or the price was just too high. That was until I found a trendy trucker hat that fit like a glove and looked awesome. It hit me – I could make my own hats just how I like them! With back to school around the corner, I wanted a unique hat for the first football game. The spirit store options were a letdown, so I took matters into my own hands and made my own “Lions” trucker hat. To my surprise, other parents loved it and asked me to make ones for them too! I was hesitant at first, but my sweet friend encouraged me to run with it, and turn it into a real business. And that’s how Haven Hat Co was born!
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
No way! I already knew the brand and style of trucker hat I wanted. I thought I just needed to watch some YouTube tutorials, buy the gear, and I’d be good to go. How tough can it be to heat-press vinyl onto a hat, right? I soon found out that working with vinyl wasn’t as easy as I thought. It took some time to get the hang of it. I tested a bunch of vinyl brands and types, but each one had its own issues. It took a ton of trial and error (and YouTube videos) to figure out what worked for me and gave me the result I wanted! I also hit some bumps with stocking and shipping. It’s a problem I’ll always have to deal with since my business depends on other companies.. I have had bad experiences with vendors. They’ve canceled parts of my order because they didn’t have the item. Or, they’ve sent the wrong thing when I was in a rush to get it. I hope to keep growing Haven Hat Co. That way, I can keep inventory on hand and avoid this hassle in the future.
Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I make trucker hats! I’ve come up with my own designs, like school spirit and seasonal sayings. But most of my orders are custom, and that’s the best part! You might already have a logo and just need it on a hat, or you might need help creating one from scratch. Either way, I’m here to guide you through it all – from picking a font to choosing vinyl colors and styles! What sets me apart is the special vinyl I use. It’s got a felt-like finish and it’s thicker than usual, which gives it a polished look!
Is there something surprising that you feel even people who know you might not know about?
I don’t think of myself as a creative person, but now I’m designing my own original designs and helping customers create theirs – it’s pretty ironic. When someone tells me i’m creative, it’s a huge compliment because I don’t see myself that way at all!
