Conversations with Wolfgang Hunter

Today we’d like to introduce you to Wolfgang Hunter

Hi Wolfgang , we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I was raised in an environment that encouraged my pursuits. My father, John Hunter, is a commercial and film composer from Brownsville, Texas. After moving to Dallas in ’93,

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
My mom battled alcoholism for over ten years. When sober, she was the best mom on the planet-I miss her dearly-but there were demons she ran from her whole life. Excess drinking brought the decline of her mental and physical health. She became abusive and manic; we were eventually estranged and our relationship was ruined. She died alone in late July 2019. There are many things left unsaid, but even more lessons learned. I speak to her daily and believe that she’s found peace.

This chapter in our lives was monumental to my journey as an artist. I better understand myself now that I’ve gained tools for healing and growth. But I took a long break from releasing music consistently-only recently have I decided to push forward. My first solo track, “this journey is yours alone”, was released less than a week ago, and I have another single coming out Friday. I’m building up to a much larger project, which includes themes of loss, grief, faith and transformation.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I’m a singer-songwriter. My studies have allowed me to exercise musical freedom, which influences the content of my work. I believe within myself is a story worth sharing, and I’m grateful to have been raised in an environment where my pursuits were recognized and encouraged.

In March 2018, I started the band “Fishing in Japan” with friends Landon Headstream, Matthew Luna and Dante Zatto. Since then, we’ve gotten over five million streams on Spotify. I’m also in a band with my current roommates Max Meyers and Connor Norton called “overheard”. We released the EP ‘moving parts’ in December 2023.

I’ve produced and co-written as well, such as with Dallas-based indie band “Sunrise Academy”, up-and-coming alt rock superstar Hannah Jadagu, and many of my friends’ solo projects.

Networking and finding a mentor can have such a positive impact on one’s life and career. Any advice?
There are attitudes more conducive to learning than others. To experience as many things with an open mind is a virtue; everybody has something to teach.

It’s important as a musician to build a network of peers to share and play together. Part of music’s nature exists in community, and I’ve found many of my own “mentors” to be peers first.
