Meet Aj Byrd

Today, we’d like to introduce you to Aj Byrd.

Aj Byrd

Hi Aj, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today.
For those of you who do not know me, my name is Aj Byrd, and I consider myself an artist of many forms. The Most High has blessed me with many gifts that involve my hands. I paint, make arts and crafts, host events, am a Zumba instructor, and do hair. I am mostly known as a natural hairstylist, and loctician specializing in loose, natural hair and locs.

I learned to do hair young but never thought I’d make it my business career. I was an educator and worked at a natural hair salon on the weekends. Once the school year ended, I became a full-time hairstylist, eventually starting my mini salon, ‘Flourish with Aj,’ in 2022. I had a suite in Irving for two years and relocated to North Dallas in February 2024. Since moving, business has not slowed down, and I am grateful.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Being an entrepreneur has challenges and requires a lot of faith in myself and The Most High. There have been times when I felt like quitting and closing my salon.

To overcome this, I’ve had lots of encouragement from friends and loyal clientele that keep me grounded. Some of my other challenges have been mental, such as being in my head about things and comparing myself to others. However, I continue learning to step back, breathe, and take a break. ‘Flourish with Aj’ has been successful for over two years, past challenges have become easier, and I have more of a grasp on things.

Despite the challenges, I have grown to love being a business owner and entrepreneur. I am happier and still learning a lot, like new hair trends, setting boundaries, and being assertive as I make my way. The ability to walk into my suite, create my schedule, make my own money, and work for myself with clients who want me to do their hair and rave about my work is an amazing feeling.

Just stay locked in with yourself. You risk everything for a vision that only you can see. In the end, I believe entrepreneurship is worth it.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar with what you do, what can you tell them about what you do?
Apart from my art, I am mostly known as a natural hairstylist and loctician specializing in the care and styling of loose, natural hair and locs. I now have a mini salon suite located in North Dallas.

While I am grateful for the suite I started in, my current suite is a significant upgrade—it’s bigger, closer to home, and decorated in a way that feels very much like me, creating a comfortable and welcoming environment. Since relocating, my business has remained consistently busy, with my books always full. All praises to The Most High. This year, my Australian client has returned, and I love that she flies over here to be in my chair.

I think my clients love the space I have created. It’s cozy, comfortable, and reflects my personality. New clients often come in feeling hopeless about their hair, but once they leave my chair, they look and feel like brand-new people. I am authentically myself and comfortable in my space. My goal isn’t just to do hair and make money; it’s to help people love their natural hair, no matter its state. As our relationships flourish, so will I and your hair strands, ya dig?

Who else deserves credit for your story?
All praises go to The Most High. I’d also like to thank everyone who has supported my business in any way, including sharing my business, booking with me, and purchasing products. Thank you to my friends and family, who always root for me.

Thank you to the content creators and other hairstylists who inspire and teach me new skills and styles. And a special thank you to those who trust me with their hair. My business would not flourish without your help. For that, I am grateful wholeheartedly. Much love to you all.
