Jamelia, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
Of course! My journey into entrepreneurship was both intentional and serendipitous. In 2018, I moved to Dallas in search of self-discovery, seeking expansion and purpose. I spent a considerable amount of time exploring various pathways into entrepreneurship, knowing that I wanted to give back to the world in a unique way, but I hadn’t yet identified a problem I felt equipped to solve.
In 2020, everything changed, and I finally had a problem to solve. I started Body Jam Essentials to address my own skin conditions. By mid-2020, during a time when many of us were compelled to reflect on our wellness, I realized that true healing begins from within. Over the next two years, Body Jam Essentials evolved beyond just a skincare line; it became a comprehensive wellness brand focusing on the mind, body, and soul.
Stepping out on faith multiple times and remaining devoted to our mission have significantly contributed to our company’s growth. An anecdote I’d like to share is about the first time I ordered the products and tools needed to create my initial batch of body butter. I had been hesitant due to the cost, but when I finally made the purchase, it turned out to be free.
Unbeknownst to me, I had a stored gift balance that covered the expenses. This serendipitous moment greatly affirmed me on my entrepreneurial journey.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Things were not always smooth. I always say that entrepreneurship is truly a spiritual journey. I think by now, as a collective, we understand that while spiritual journeys can be beautifully transformative, they also reveal parts of ourselves that were perhaps hidden and sometimes difficult to face.
One of the biggest obstacles I’ve faced is remaining consistently devoted to the brand and the vision. There will be times when you don’t receive the support you expect from your loved ones and times when you don’t achieve the resources you believe you deserve for your offering. In both those moments, you must still believe in the vision and mission.
We’re so used to instant gratification and seeing the final success of a brand. Truthfully, building a durable, sustainable, and intentional brand takes incremental and deliberate steps forward, adaptability, and a whole lot of faith.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
Body Jam is a mind, body, and soul wellness brand specializing in herbal-infused oils and body butter, specifically targeting dry and damaged skin conditions like eczema, psoriasis, and dermatitis. We’ve curated our products and experiences to address more than just the surface—we aim to foster a holistic healing journey.
I’m most proud of the way we merge skincare with soul care through our intentional body butter workshop classes. We teach people to integrate mindfulness into everyday self-care routines, making it easier to maintain a consistent self-care regimen that nurtures both their exterior and interior well-being. It’s truly where skincare meets soul care.
Do you have any memories from childhood that you can share with us?
My favorite childhood memories involve family. I loved holidays and family gatherings. I remember running around and hiding from the adults under the table and tablecloth.
If I had to narrow it down to one memory, it would be the nights my mom would record me performing and singing my favorite songs in my bedroom. When I was younger, I dreamed of being a performer, and any chance I could get a mic, the star in me was activated.
