Community Highlights: Meet Andrea Orris of Choreography By Dre

Today we’d like to introduce you to Andrea Orris

Andrea, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I have been involved in the sport of gymnastics since I was 8 years old. I started out as a competitive athlete, qualifying to the Junior Olympic National Championships two times, then went on to receive a D1 Scholarship to compete for Illinois State University. Upon graduation from ISU, I have explored many different roles in the fitness industry. I became an NCAA Coach & Choreographer, Club Coach Levels 3-10, Group & Private Stretch Coach, Circus Artist, and Fitness Model. My current focus is the Head Coach of two Texas High School Gymnastics Teams, and Independent Choreographer. Throughout all of these roles, I have been a consistent and strong advocate to change the abusive culture in gymnastics.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It has definitely not been a smooth road. Though gymnastics is my passion, it once almost destroyed me. After experiencing abusive coaching tactics that left me mentally and emotionally defeated, I wanted to quit the sport all together. This abusive treatment caused eating disorders so severe, that I had to be put on bed rest for an entire month during my senior year of high school, due to heart damage from bulimia and anorexia. It took me years to relearn how to eat when I was hungry and stop when I was full. There are times when I feel I have gained my confidence and self-worth back, but there are also times when I slip back into the low mentality of feeling inadequate.

Going to Illinois State University is what saved my life and put me back on a good path. I loved representing a team. I loved being a part of a community that valued me. After almost losing my scholarship while trying to recover from my eating disorders and severe depression, all of my hard work began to pay off, and I finally started getting my life back. While at ISU, I received the Phoenix Award; given to the Most Improved Athlete of all sports, made the 1st Team All-Conference Team, and became the MIC Senior Athlete of the Year.

This turn around is really what inspired my coaching style today. Having coaches and teammates who encouraged me, rather than using fear tactics and threats to force me to perform, inspired me to dedicate myself to being a part of the culture change in gymnastics. This new method is not only more productive, but it creates more longevity in the sport. I hope to be a part in keeping this upward trend in motion.

Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Choreography By Dre?
During the work week and school year, I am the Head Coach of two High School Gymnastics Teams. When I am not coaching, I have my own choreography business. You can follow my work on my Instagram account, @choreographybyedre .

Choreographing is truly my passion. I love every part of the process. From music selection and creation, to making dances that fit each personality type and athletes’ personal movement style. It take hours and hours of hard work for each routine, but I never get tired of it. I love seeing an athlete flourish through movement. This is the one event where they get to show their personality, show a part of their soul. It is so important to me that the gymnast gets an emotional outlet through their floor routine. Those are the routines that I am the most proud of.

If the gymnasts are located in the DFW area, I meet with them in person. I am also willing to travel, as well as offer online services. To book with me, email StretchwithAndrea@gmail.com, or send a DM to my business Instagram account, @choreographybydre.

What has been the most important lesson you’ve learned along your journey?
Your life is about more than your sport. Your life is more than your career. Anything worth having takes sacrifice, yes. But don’t sacrifice your well-being or time with your loved ones for anything. You need balance. Life is about community, family, and using your God-given gifts to lift others!
