Today we’d like to introduce you to Anastasia Strattan.
Anastasia, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I got started in hair and makeup as a theater major in college. I got to do hair and makeup for many theater productions and took that into more commercial avenues after college. I started in bridal hair and makeup in 2009 with a company called TC Makeup. The owner, Tisha Corcoran, taught me the art of airbrushing and false lashes and I took off from there! I worked for her for 5 years before branching out and starting my own company, Concepts by Anastasia, and began working for other teams as well. About 3 years into my freelance career, I decided to go to Paul Mitchell to get my cosmetology license. This proved to be an incredibly lucrative and fulfilling move. I am able to cross market my skill sets and create a schedule that works well for all parties involved! I have now been doing hair and makeup for 14 years, cosmetology for 11 years and am beyond grateful to have found this career!
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It was definitely say the transition from acting to hair and makeup was fairly smooth. I would say something that is a struggle, owning my own business, is the idea of balance. I know every owner or entrepreneur goes through a “yes to everything” phase which is exhausting and a truly trying time, but shows what healthy boundaries can be set and standards that help hold those boundaries in place. Staffing is also a pitfall at points but I feel like I learned that hiring people as good or better than me and paying them what they are worth is a winning solution!
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I do most things beauty- cut, color, extensions, special event hair and makeup, and teach hair and makeup! I specialize in lived in cut and color, bridal hair and makeup and teaching the basics of hair design! I love helping consumers learn how to curl their hair and do a 5 minute face. I love helping pros have continued education to up their skillsets.
Have you learned any interesting or important lessons due to the Covid-19 Crisis?
I learned that any career is on the chopping block and that I needed to diversify my income streams and focus on the importance of time as a commodity instead of income. It was a very interesting time for me personally, as I was pregnant with my third child. I enjoyed taking a step back to reevaluate and align my beliefs and thoughts. I also became more grateful to be a business owner and mother during that time.
