I am from Texas and was raised in a Caribbean-American household, with my mother being from Trinidad and Tobago and my father from Texas. Throughout my childhood, I had a deep passion for fashion. I can vividly recall the moment when I received my very first designer handbag at the age of nine (9). It happened during a family trip to the Dooney & Bourke outlet. While browsing the store, my aunt asked if I wanted one of the bags that I had been admiring and modeling around. Without hesitation, I eagerly replied with a resounding “Yes!” That day marked the beginning of my profound affection for handbags. From affordable brands to high-end labels and even independent designers, I developed an appreciation for the way handbags, regardless of their price, brought joy to women of all ages. This experience left an indelible impression on me and inspired me to establish my own brand that resonates with others.
Living overseas in Spain and France played a significant role in inspiring me to start the handbag brand DESERI. During my time abroad, I was exposed to rich and diverse fashion cultures that ignited my creativity and fueled my passion for design. I had the opportunity to immerse myself in the vibrant fashion scenes of both countries, exploring local boutiques, attending fashion shows, and interacting with talented artisans.
In Spain, I was captivated by the artistry and craftsmanship of Spanish leather goods. The attention to detail and the dedication to producing high-quality products deeply impressed me. It was in Spain that I gained a profound appreciation for the meticulous techniques used in handbag manufacturing.
Similarly, my time in France exposed me to the timeless elegance and sophistication of French fashion. I marveled at the iconic luxury brands and observed how they seamlessly blended tradition with innovation. This experience instilled in me a desire to create handbags that embodied both classic elegance and contemporary style.
The combination of these experiences living overseas in Spain and France, along with my lifelong love for handbags, served as the catalyst for launching DESERI. I aspired to create a brand that would encapsulate the essence of European craftsmanship and design, while also infusing it with my personal vision and unique perspective.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
As an entrepreneur, the road has definitely not been smooth. One of the biggest struggles I faced was the need to understand every aspect of my business. I had to learn the intricacies of various departments like marketing, finance, operations, and design. This required me to wear multiple hats and ensure I comprehended everyone’s roles and responsibilities. This challenge, though difficult, allowed me to shape my platform for success, identify areas for improvement, and implement innovative solutions, ultimately helping me develop a strategic mindset that drives DESERI forward.

After a successful career in education, Deseri took a leap of faith to pursue her lifelong dream of starting her own Black female-owned business. Today, DESERI stands as a representation of all women, promising the versatility and functionality that the roles of a modern woman demand.

I specialize in creating handcrafted handbags that combine European sophistication with modern style. DESERI is known for its impeccable craftsmanship, attention to detail, and the use of high-quality materials sourced from local Spanish leathers. My handbags are designed to make women feel confident and stylish, whether they’re in the boardroom or out for a fun weekend.

Additionally, my commitment to creating accessible luxury, combined with a focus on empowering women, truly distinguishes DESERI from other brands.
What are you most proud brand wise?
I am most proud of the admiration and loyalty of our customers, along with making premium designs accessible are testaments to our brand’s success. Making premium designs accessible and inspiring confidence and individuality is at the heart of everything we do.. Additionally, I’m immensely proud to be the first Black woman-owned luxury store featured in Galleria Dallas in the 42 years it has been open, marking a significant milestone in our journey.
