Today we’d like to introduce you to Hailey Schultz
Hi Hailey, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
At 18 years old, fresh out of high school, I had no idea on what I wanted to do. I was lost. I decided to start my college experience as a Nursing Major. My grandma was a nurse, my sister was a nurse and my mom is just a natural care-taker. I quickly realized that Nursing was not the right path for me so I went to my college advisor and switched to Education. I had always wanted to work with and be around kids everyday. After careful consideration, I decided this was not my path either. I went back to my college advisor, told her my concerns but also my goals and aspirations. We together decided to switch my degree to Liberal Arts to help fuel my creative side. I took classes such as Sculpting, 3D Design, Film Photography and Art History. I fell in love with the work and the classes. During this time being a broke college student, I picked up a hobby I had never tried before, thrifting. I had never loved a hobby more. Being able to find unique pieces and style them in fun ways became my stress reliever. After two years of college, I graduated with an Associates degree in Liberal Arts. I then decided to take some time off and move to Austin. While living there, I started working for Garment Modern and Vintage, the most amazing vintage store in the area full of rare designer vintage. I felt like I was in heaven. Because it was such a small team, I got to work on the website, photoshoots, styling and more. This was the job that fueled my love for the vintage and sustainable side of fashion and I honestly never looked back. I decided to pursue fashion fully and today I have my Bachelor’s Degree in Fashion Merchandising and a Minor in Photography from the University of North Texas. From there, I have freelanced with companies such as Neiman Marcus, styled multiple different photoshoots, kept working with local vintage stores in the area such as Vintage Martini and Clotheshorse Anonymous. I now use my Fashion Design experience as a Design Consultant and stylist for Nardos Design.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Definitely not. I think everyone goes through trial and tribulations in their 20’s when they are trying to figure out their path, goals, aspirations and more. I didn’t graduate college till I was 25 years old as I took a little longer to figure those things out. I grew up with severe ADHD and was never a “star student”. I struggled taking tests and staying focused. This ultimately negatively affected my ability to do well when it came to anything school related. At 21 years old, I decided to stop taking ADHD medication as I did not want to rely on it now that I was an adult. When I started attending the University of North Texas at 22 years old, I loved my classes and work so much and worked so hard despite everything else. I ended up graduating on the President’s List and Honor Roll with a 3.75 GPA. I had never felt more accomplished.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
With a background in Photography, Styling, Sustainable Fashion, Fashion Design, Fashion Merchandising, Personal Shopping and different art forms such as painting, drawing, I have always enjoyed doing it all and never just one thing. I would say the biggest thing I am known for is finding and sourcing really cool vintage pieces from thrift stores, consignment stores or online through websites such as Vestiaire or TheRealReal. I actually started my own resale company called “Something from Somewhere” and I loved doing this so much. When I got my current full-time job at Nardos Design, I unfortunately had to put it on the back burner but very much want to pick it back up soon.
How can people work with you, collaborate with you or support you?
There is nothing I love more than collaborating with local artists, photographers and even stores. I recently have done some collaborative work with the Jowa Shop located in Bishop Arts on a couple photoshoots. I am always open and ready to collaborate on new fun idea whether it be styling, photography or creative direction. This could be a test shoot, something for social media or just for fun. I love expressing creativity in any way I can.
