Today we’d like to introduce you to Kristy Beck-Miller.
Kristy, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
After graduating from Texas Wesleyan University, I worked as a head microscopist and microbiologist at a local forensic laboratory. As the lab began getting more and more indoor air quality samples, I took some certification courses to better understand what my clients were needing as far as data interpretation. It was from those classes that my love for the forensic side of indoor environments was born.
As a member of the leading training organization at the time, volunteering my time to its various committees, I was offered a full-time position with them. I spent 14 years serving them as their Scientific Technical Director. Helping them create certification courses, write standard operating procedures and even getting them ANSI certified to produce ANSI certified standards all benefiting the indoor environment.
In 2013, after years of being urged to go into the field and help the consumers, I started Adaptive Environmental Consulting of Texas. We are part of a larger partnership of like-minded scientific persons across the country who strive to help others when they find that their environment is making them ill.
When I started my business, I made it a goal to get my husband out of Corporate America. It took me a little under a year and now he has become not only my life partner but my business partner! We have been extremely blessed to be together nurturing our children as well growing our business.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I have been extremely blessed that my journey in this industry has been amazing, filled with the joys of helping others. The most difficult challenge can be juggling work and family time. I truly believe that in stopping all work to spend time with my children helps keep me stay grounded and focused on why I decided to start a local business of my own. Although, I will admit that I do tend to work some late evenings after they go to bed.
Adaptive Environmental Consulting of Texas – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
We specialize in helping people find what in their environment could be making them sick and finding reasonable, cost-effective solutions. The air that we breathe is most often taken for granted until something in it affects our health. We test for a variety of things, both biological and chemical, from the mold, lead, radon, mycotoxins, volatile organic compounds, etc.
I believe that it is our passion to help our clients that sets us apart from most. We hold their hands throughout the entire process, try to alleviate their worries and fears and treat them with honesty and integrity. Our clients become like family to us and we love them!
What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
It was wonderful fun being interviewed by Time Magazine! But I think I’m most proud not for my various certifications or accolades but by the little “thank you” notes I receive from clients when I help them through issues with their home or business. Those always brighten my heart!
