Today we’d like to introduce you to Jennifer Valadez
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I feel like I began my love for music at a very young age. I sang in the youth church choir at the age of 9 or 10 and then also joined the choir at school in junior high. I would also record myself singing in my teen years and share those tapes with friends.
I would eventually sing solos in my church choir and solos at school. I thought about being a DJ in college however, I was told by my parents and peers that I would not be able to make a living from that so, I immediately flipped the switch and found myself immersed in the service industry. I immediately thrived in serving, cooking, bartending and eventually managing restaurants and bars. I loved the money and also loved serving people. It was another type of way to gratify myself as well as others. I did that for many years until I burned myself out of that industry. I started looking for something new and different. So, I went on Craigslist and many other sites for work and found a prospect looking for a sales person in the wedding industry. I applied and got the call back which in turn had me networking with all types of people in the wedding industry. So, circling around I ended up meeting a handful of DJs who had been working events, weddings etc. That immediately peaked my interest! Make a long story short, I connected with them on my off time, learned and got inspired! So, after a few months of shadowing and doing the work; I was on my way to start my journey.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Yes, there are struggles along the way. For instance, it takes money to make money. I can not show up to an event with cheap speakers and a microphone. These things matter! I learned from my peers that quality matters in every which way! I also, had to get myself comfortable around a microphone to make announcements and such. Statistics show that 85% of people have a fear of speaking in front of a large crowd! I was nervous every time that first year!
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I specialize in mostly corporate events. I also enjoy working themed weddings/ private events. I’m known to bring the party/ house down! BC I know how to read a crowd. I like to get to know my client so, I know what kind of vibe or party they want. I meet with my client via video call /phone or in person to allow us to get together and find out if we are a good fit for each other. Nothing is forced. I’m not a car dealer. lol No offense, you all!! I’m not just trying to make a buck. I’m making sure that the client and I are on the same page and I can give them what they are expecting, if not more! This is an event that will be memorable to all!!
Can you talk to us a bit about the role of luck?
I’ve had really good luck in how everything has played out in my life for the last 10 years or so. I truly do believe that it’s all factored in the relationships you build and are open to. Networking and making lasting relationships are definitely key.
