Today we’d like to introduce you to Devon Gibson
Hi Devon, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I was born and raised in Waco, TX. In 2013, I moved to Arlington to attend the University of Texas at Arlington. I later graduated with a BBA concentrated in Finance in Spring 2017. In 2016, I joined my first cover band, The Signature Band, led by George Anderson (bassist & vocalist). I was in this band until its retirement in 2021. During that time, I joined and sang with multiple other bands in the DFW metroplex. The gigs were predominantly weddings and corporate parties & events. Over the years, I was granted opportunities to play my own gigs in bars/lounges locally.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Typical struggles of an independent contractor working with multiple bands/companies. If there’s no gig, there’s no money. But once I made connections and more people saw & heard what I can do, more opportunities to work came my way.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I’m a singer! I’m an entertainer! I’m an emcee! I have spent years performing at weddings, parties, bars & lounges, you name it, I probably have had a chance to sing there. When I step on the stage, it doesn’t even feel like work, it feels like home. I’m most proud of the fact that I did it, I do it, and will continue to do so because I have raw God-given talent that appeals to people. I’ve always had the dream of my voice taking me around the world and it’s done just that! Not only do I have the talent, I have the personality and the interpersonal skills to connect with people beyond music. I have often found myself in situations where I am the talent and the band manager/lead. There are plenty of people I’ve encountered who would say I’m a pleasure to work with!
Do you have any advice for those just starting out?
Be eager to learn & grow. Remember constructive criticism is NECESSARY for improvement. Be present and enjoy every moment. Put yourself out there and connect with likeminded individuals. Bet on yourself at all times and believe in yourself. I wish I knew more about the cover band industry, the ins and outs and such. But I didn’t have this back in Waco when I was growing up. I didn’t know that having a career as a cover band singer was even a thing.
