Rising Stars: Meet Prisma Garcia

Today we’d like to introduce you to Prisma Garcia.

Prisma Garcia

Thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, how did you get started?
I am the daughter of immigrants, and I was born and raised in Dallas, Texas. I have been living in the Pleasant Grove neighborhood in Southeast Dallas. I have two sisters; I am the middle child. My parents arrived in Dallas in the 1980s, and I attribute all my success to them. I have learned to be proud of my background. We have to learn to tell others about our journey so that we can help others. I often find that humans are more alike than different. I am always willing to help younger professionals and be a connector to all.

We all face challenges, but looking back, would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
My upbringing in Pleasant Grove was indeed challenging, and I didn’t always have the same opportunities as my peers. When I ventured off to college, I found myself 1,000 miles away, grappling with the complexities of a new life. As a first-generation college student, I’ve had to navigate uncharted territories and build a robust network to gain access to unfamiliar spaces. But through it all, I’ve remained resilient, never letting the challenges deter me from my path.

As you know, we’re big fans of your work. What can you tell our readers who might not be as familiar with it?
I often describe myself as a catalyst for change. I firmly believe that each of us can contribute to making the world a better place. As a social impact strategist, I’ve dedicated my time and skills to various nonprofit organizations, striving to make a meaningful difference. In recent years, I’ve honed my focus and intentionality, aiming to maximize my impact. I’m proud to be the co-founder and board secretary at Community Does It, the pioneering mental health clinic in 75217.

Before we let you go, we’ve had to ask if you have any advice for those just starting.
Starting at the bottom is okay. Take the time to learn from those with more experience, appreciate their stories, and learn from others’ mistakes. It is essential to network and genuinely get to know people. Learning new things is always a plus, and it’s okay if your career is not linear—many are not. Therefore, take risks and seize new opportunities.
