Today we’d like to introduce you to Cynthia Munoz
Cynthia , we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
My husband, Jesus Silva, and I own Mariachi Tequila DFW. We started the group in 2024 with talented musicians we’ve known and performed with over the years. We have been married since 2019 and met through mariachi in 2013.
I was born in Fort Worth and began playing violin at the age of 11 and was part of my school’s orchestra. I participated in the Fort Worth All-City Orchestra and soloist competitions. At the age of 15, I began playing in my first mariachi youth group after my father passed away. This was my way of keeping his memory alive, as he was and still is one of the most important people in my life. Mariachi music helped me get through the most difficult years of my life after losing my father.
I utilized my skills as a mariachi musician to support myself through my undergraduate studies. It was during this time that I crossed paths with my now-husband, Jesus, at a restaurant or “planta” where I performed every Sunday in Fort Worth. Little did I know, Jesus was interested in recruiting me for his musical group. After completing my studies, I earned a Bachelor of Science in Biology from the University of Texas-Arlington. Presently, I work as a Medical Laboratory Scientist specializing in Molecular Infectious Diseases and Microbiology at Baylor University Medical Center in Dallas, TX.
Jesus, also known as “Chuy,” is a native of Waco, Texas, and comes from a family of accomplished mariachi musicians. His love for mariachi music began with his grandfather, uncles, and mother, who greatly encouraged him to pursue music. Jesus started playing the violin in elementary school and continued his musical education until he graduated from University High School. In 2009, he moved to Arlington, TX, where he also used mariachi as a source of income. He graduated from the University of Texas-Arlington with degrees in public relations and advertising and a minor in marketing. Presently, Jesus works at Texas Christian University as the digital marketing coordinator for the Office of Admission.
After performing for five years in the same group, life took us in different directions, and we started performing with various groups in the DFW area. During this time, we expanded our network and observed how other mariachi bands operate. Typically, mariachi bands are sole proprietorships. Handling all the marketing, administration, and musical direction is a lot of work for one person. However, as a married couple with full-time jobs aside from our musical endeavors, we split the work up. Jesus serves as the musical director, and multi-media specialist, and I function as the operations director of the band, handling client relationships, as well mange our social media. We regularly talk and brainstorm about the band’s direction and how to make things efficient. We are very fortunate to have a team of multi-talented individual who also lend their professional skills to the group. One of our trumpet players is also a photographer has been a vital part in establishing the group’s brand.
After playing apart for several years, we realized that one of the greatest parts of mariachi was that it brought us together and helped us achieve our greatest goals in life.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Learning an instrument is pretty tough, the first couple of years are going to be rough, and you won’t sound very good. But after constant practice and mentorship, you start to get better and better. Starting this mariachi is very reminiscent of that idea, we do face challenges. Having a full-time job, it’s hard to find time to practice, respond to clients, and also be a wife. My husband shares the same struggles. But we work hard to make sure we’re both pulling our weight and share the common goal that we want this business to be successful. We have faith that if we continue to look for efficiencies and capitalize on opportunities, this group will sound and be better throughout the years. In the last few months, we have been growing and are working pretty constantly on the weekends.
As you know, we’re big fans of Mariachi Tequila DFW . For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
We are a versatile mariachi group that not only has a love for mariachi music but all types of music. All our members come from diverse backgrounds with mariachi music being at the core, but we all enjoy all types of music and can be showcased in some of our performances.
We value transparent and clear communication not just with our clients but with our team. We make every effort to make all our team members’ voices be heard and cater to what our clients would like to hear as best as we can. We believe this is key to maintaining a trusting and fruitful brand identity.
Is there a quality that you most attribute to your success?
Being transparent and sincere with our team and clients.
