Community Highlights: Meet Sir Edward Potier-Jones of The Bettered Men Foundation

Today we’d like to introduce you to Sir Edward Potier-Jones

Hi Sir Edward, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I was in an abusive relationship for eight years. During that time, my partner was physically and emotionally abusive and used my gender against me, saying things like I should “take it like a man.” I only found my voice through therapy, where I learned to become more communicative and advocate for myself. After we broke up, she began harassing me and stalking me on campus, successfully isolating me from my support system. When I took my concerns to the university, I didn’t get the help I needed, but it gave her a chance to retaliate. During this time, I started feeling isolated and exhibiting self-damaging behaviors, which impacted my professional and personal relationships. I ended up dropping out of all of my classes and leaving school altogether to avoid her. Once I realized there weren’t many support options for male survivors of domestic violence out there, I began thinking of ways to help others like me. That’s why I began the Bettered Men’s Foundation.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
The initial reaction was hesitant to say the least. Whenever anyone hears the words “men” and “abuse” in a sentence, they mistakenly believe that abuse only comes from one side and that men can’t be victims too. That’s why we pivoted from a focus on domestic violence to cultivating positive relationships. Since then, we’ve seen more success with men expressing themselves and learning how to better advocate for themselves.

Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
Although we directly aid men, we provide support, education and resources for personal development and empowerment to all parts of families and communities. We’re creating a comprehensive support system that’s accessible and affordable where people feel seen and validated.

As our patrons take advantage of our therapeutic services, we look to collaborate with other nonprofits, community organizations, public offices and corporate sponsors who specialize in civic engagement.

Are there any important lessons you’ve learned that you can share with us?
The one thing I’ve learned through all of this is that the journey to healing cannot be taken alone. As I’ve started this nonprofit, I learned that there’s a need to educate the community on issues that are culturally misunderstood and often ignored or overlooked. Now, there’s more awareness of the issue, and those affected by it can get the support they need.
