Today we’d like to introduce you to Jennifer Deleon. MA
Hi Jennifer , can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
My name is Jennifer Deleon, and I am in long-term recovery. For many years, I struggled with substance abuse and alcohol due to untreated trauma, eventually losing everything. Choosing to live in sober housing provided me with accountability, a routine, and the foundation for lasting recovery.
Inspired by my journey, I wanted to give back and support other women. I decided to become a counselor and enrolled at the University of North Texas, where I earned a bachelor’s degree in Rehabilitation and Addiction Studies. I continued my education at the Chicago School of Professional Psychology, earning a master’s degree in Clinical Mental Health Counseling.
Driven by my passion, I founded a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization called Janie’s Place Sober Living. We have three homes in Dallas, Carrollton, and Plano, offering women a safe and supportive environment to achieve and sustain long-term recovery from drugs and alcohol.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Some of the challenges I faced early on included transportation issues and working minimum-wage jobs. I utilized community resources such as Denton County MHMR for counseling, Metrocare for rental assistance, and food stamps to support myself during this time.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
Janie’s Place is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to providing a safe and secure space for women to further their recovery. We offer affordable, quality housing where women can live alongside others who are also working to achieve and sustain long-term recovery.
What sets Janie’s Place apart is my personal experience in long-term recovery and my background as a therapist. I take a clinical approach to our program, assisting women with anxiety, depression, and trauma, and connecting them with community resources for medical care, food stamps, and job opportunities through the Texas Workforce Commission and community temp agencies.
What I am most proud of is my own recovery and my ability to guide these women toward a better path in life.
Who else deserves credit in your story?
Gail A. Chester, Ph.D., L.P.C., L.M.F.T. has been my mentor, providing guidance, advice, feedback, and support. As a role model, teacher, counselor, advisor, sponsor, advocate, and ally, Gail has equipped me with the tools to become a better version of myself.
