Life & Work with Katherine Hernandez of Carrollton

Today we’d like to introduce you to Katherine Hernandez

Hi Katherine, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I’ve always been a baker. I was 10 years old when I made my first batch of cookies from scratch. I remember they were rock hard my mom could not even soften them with coffee. with time I got better at baking and ended up in charge of desserts for every holiday. as I grew older and started working I stopped baking. I would have never thought years later I’d start my own treat business.

for the past few years my partner has always bought me chocolate covered Strawberries for valentines day and I recall valentines day 2021 I got a random idea to make chocolate covered Strawberries. for it being my first time making them they came out good both visually and taste wise. I took a picture of them and posted on Facebook with no intent to sale however I got a DM if I was selling. of course I said no. my family loved them so I made some again a week later. this time I decorated them different. I posted them again on my time line and received another DM if I was selling. that time I Said yes and disclosed that I was new and could not guarantee quality. she said ok I charged her $10 for a dozen and they came out amazing. I got such a high from that experience and that was when Katsdippedtreats was born. a month later my bestie was having her daughters birthday party and I asked her if I could make a dessert table for her at no cost, it being my very first time and she said yes. I fell in love with the process. after that I dedicated myself to learning the trade and here we are 3 years later going strong.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
I struggled in the beginning to learn the correct materials to use. in early 2021 there was not as much social influence as there is today. today I can get on Tiktok and find my answer for free, not like back them when every one was gatekeeping. back then you’d have to pay for a simple answer which I actually did. now on my social media platforms if a fellow treat maker asks me a question I respond with links and everything. customer wise thank god I have had a smooth road.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I offer a variety of treats. some are chocolate dipped like cakepops & strawberries, others are baked like my Flans and Cheesecakes and others are whipped like my cheesecake shooters, banana pudding, and fresas con crema.

I’d say my specialty are my mini flans. I can say I have perfected my recipe after many many intents. fun fact I hate flan but love making it.

I think what sets me apart from others is the love I pour into making my treats. every treat that goes out my door is a representation of myself. so I do my best to make the best. from the best ingredient to making sure I put care labels on each box. I don’t take the easy way. I could easily use cool whip or boxed cheesecake mix where all you do is add milk but I choose to make my own whip cream, buttercream and cheesecake filling.

Do you have any advice for those looking to network or find a mentor?
I’d say if you are just starting out Tiktok and youtube will be your best mentors. once you have gotten your feet wet and found what you want to specialize on focus on mastering that skill. but do your research before you spend money on classes. there is so many people on social media who offer Ebooks and so many networking events that cost hundreds of dollars all for you not to learn much so before spending make sure its worth the money.
