Today we’d like to introduce you to Amanda Gordon
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
My journey has been one of unexpected twists and turns, shaped by both personal challenges and a deep-rooted desire to make a difference. Growing up in Texas, I always had a passion for education and a soft spot for children facing learning obstacles. But life threw me some curveballs. I was diagnosed with endometriosis, PCOS, and a host of mental health conditions that made everyday life a struggle.
Despite these challenges, I pursued my dream of higher education. I’m now a full-time business major at Southern New Hampshire University. But my personal experiences fueled a drive to do more than just study. I found solace and purpose in volunteering – both locally and online – and eventually joined the board of directors for a non-profit focused on international student exchange programs.
The biggest blow came with the loss of my sister. It was devastating, and honestly, I didn’t know how I’d ever recover. But through the grief, I realized I needed to turn my pain into something positive. I started writing poetry, finding an outlet for my emotions, and two of my poems have even been published.
That loss also ignited a passion for giving back in even bigger ways. I co-founded a non-profit dedicated to tutoring kids with learning disabilities. I drew inspiration from my own struggles and the understanding that every child deserves the chance to succeed, regardless of their challenges. Currently, I’m also collaborating with fellow students and professors on a non-profit aimed at inmate education and breaking down the stigmas surrounding incarceration.
I’m still a work in progress, and some days are harder than others. I have my loving pit bull by my side and a growing network of support. I believe that our experiences, both the triumphs and the heartbreaks, shape who we are and what we’re capable of. I’m committed to using my story to empower others, especially children, to overcome their obstacles and embrace their potential.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The road to where I am today has been anything but smooth. In fact, it’s been filled with more potholes and detours than I ever could have imagined.
My journey has been deeply intertwined with my health struggles. Endometriosis and PCOS have brought chronic pain and fatigue, making it a challenge to simply get through the day, let alone pursue my dreams. On top of that, I’ve battled anxiety, CPTSD, depression, panic disorder, and social anxiety, which have made even the smallest tasks feel insurmountable at times.
Then, just as I thought I was finding my footing, I lost my sister. The grief was all-consuming, and for a while, I truly believed I would never recover. It was the darkest period of my life, and it shook me to my core.
But even amidst the pain, I discovered a resilience I didn’t know I possessed. I realized that my struggles could be a source of strength, not just for myself but for others who are facing similar challenges.
I learned to navigate my health issues, finding ways to manage my conditions and advocate for myself. I sought therapy and support groups, which helped me develop coping mechanisms for my mental health struggles. And I found solace in creative outlets like writing, which allowed me to express my emotions and connect with others who had experienced similar losses.
It hasn’t been easy, and I still have my bad days. But I’ve learned to embrace the ups and downs, knowing that each challenge has made me stronger and more determined to make a difference in the world.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
My work is a tapestry woven from my passions, experiences, and the unwavering belief that everyone deserves the opportunity to thrive.
In my day-to-day life, I wear many hats. I lead the HR department for a non-profit dedicated to reducing homelessness, cultivating community gardens, and promoting adaptive sports. This role allows me to combine my business acumen with my passion for social justice, ensuring that our organization is a supportive and empowering workplace for our team.
Additionally, I serve as the Director of Grant Development & Compliance for another non-profit focused on facilitating high school international student exchange programs. This is incredibly rewarding, as I get to play a part in shaping the future of young people by opening doors to cross-cultural understanding and global citizenship.
On the entrepreneurial side, I run my own small business specializing in regulatory compliance for the trucking industry. I help companies navigate the complexities of obtaining, updating, or dismissing MC and DOT numbers, as well as ensuring adherence to all FMCSA regulations. It’s a niche field, but it’s vital for keeping our roads safe and ensuring fair competition in the industry.
What sets me apart is my unique blend of experiences and my unwavering commitment to making a difference. I’ve faced personal challenges that have given me a deep empathy for others and a drive to create positive change. I’m not afraid to roll up my sleeves and do the hard work, whether it’s advocating for the homeless, supporting international students, or helping trucking companies stay compliant.
I’m most proud of the impact I’ve been able to make in the lives of others. Seeing a homeless individual find housing, a student thrive in a new country, or a trucking company operate safely and efficiently – these are the moments that fuel my passion and remind me why I do what I do.
My work is not just a career; it’s a calling. It’s a way for me to channel my energy, skills, and experiences into making the world a better place, one step at a time.
Do you have any advice for those just starting out?
Absolutely! Drawing from my own experiences, here’s some advice I’d offer to those starting out on their own path:
Embrace the Messy Middle: Life rarely follows a straight line. There will be setbacks, detours, and unexpected challenges. Don’t get discouraged by the messiness; it’s often in those moments of struggle that we learn and grow the most.
Turn Pain into Purpose: Whether it’s physical or emotional pain, don’t let it consume you. Find ways to channel that energy into something positive. For me, it was writing, volunteering, and building organizations to help others. Your pain can become a powerful catalyst for change.
Find Your Tribe: Surround yourself with people who lift you up, support your dreams, and challenge you to be better. Having a strong support network is crucial, especially when things get tough. I’m grateful for the incredible people in my life who have helped me through some of my darkest moments.
Embrace Your Unique Story: Don’t be afraid to be different. Your experiences, challenges, and perspectives are what make you unique. Own your story and use it to connect with others, inspire change, and leave your mark on the world.
It’s Never Too Late to Start: Whether you’re starting a new career, pursuing a passion project, or simply trying to figure out your next step, remember that it’s never too late to begin. I didn’t start my non-profit work until later in life, and I’m so grateful I took that leap.
Take Care of Yourself: Prioritize your physical and mental well-being. It’s easy to get caught up in the hustle and neglect self-care, but it’s essential for long-term success and happiness. Make time for activities that nourish your soul and recharge your batteries.
Don’t Be Afraid to Ask for Help: We all need help sometimes. Don’t let pride or fear prevent you from reaching out to others for support. Whether it’s a therapist, mentor, friend, or family member, there are people who care about you and want to see you succeed.
Celebrate Small Victories: Don’t wait for the big wins to celebrate your accomplishments. Take time to acknowledge and appreciate the small steps you take along the way. It’s these small victories that build momentum and keep you moving forward.
Never Stop Learning: The world is constantly changing, and so are we. Embrace lifelong learning and be open to new experiences, ideas, and perspectives. This will not only enhance your personal growth but also make you a more valuable asset in any field.
Give Back: Find ways to contribute to your community and make a positive impact on the world. Whether it’s volunteering your time, donating to a cause you care about, or simply being kind to others, giving back can bring a sense of fulfillment and purpose to your life.
I wish I had known that it’s okay to not have all the answers, to make mistakes, and to ask for help. I’ve learned that vulnerability is a strength, not a weakness, and that true success comes from embracing the journey, not just the destination.
