Daily Inspiration: Meet Waithaka

Today we’d like to introduce you to Waithaka

Hi Waithaka, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I am a US-based Kenyan music producer, artist, composer, and owner of my indie label. I started off as a novice learning the piano in the early 2000s to now becoming a versatile music producer working with some of Kenya’s great talents as well as some international acts. Over the past 20 years, I’ve dedicated myself to creating music that not only defines Kenya’s musical legacy but also resonates deeply within the African diaspora, through my unique production style and dedication to creating timeless music. Through my indie label, Waithaka Ent, I continue to work with and support African artists, contributing to the rich cultural tapestry of the global music scene.

I recently celebrated my 20th anniversary in the music industry with the release of my latest album, ‘Soul’d Duets’ which has received positive response from listeners worldwide. This has been a monumental milestone in my career that I’m truly grateful for.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It has not been an easy journey. It has been a challenging endeavour – one that heavily depends on passion and commitment. Some of the obstacles I’ve faced throughout my career include financial and time constraints. It is a very expensive career to be in due to many expenses (music production costs, promotional and marketing costs – music videos, etc) and one that requires lots of time, dedication and connections with industry stakeholders.

Other challenges have been acquiring gear/equipment which are expensive as well as the lack of opportunities to generate income sustainably.Although it has been a challenging and long journey, the relationships I’ve built have had a major impact on the growth of my brand and label.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I am an award-winning music producer, artist, composer, and the owner of my indie label Waithaka Ent. Over the past 20 years, I’ve dedicated myself to creating music that not only defines Kenya’s musical legacy but also resonates deeply with global audiences.

I’ve had the privilege of working with some of Kenya’s most notable artists, such as Kwame Rĩgĩi, Ayrosh, Mutoriah, Zaituni Wambui, and Serro. My work also extends beyond Kenyan borders, including collaborations with Grammy-nominated engineer Giggz and renowned Congolese-French musician Kaysha.

Through my label, Waithaka Ent, I’ve curated a diverse catalog that spans various genres and speaks to global audiences. Notable projects include my debut album ‘Odes by Queens,’ which was Kenya’s first all-female featured album, the highly sophomore album ‘BLK2541,’ featuring some highly-talented African artists in Kenya and beyond, my collaborative project ‘Moshi’ with Zimbabwean artist MJ Wemoto, and my latest R&B album, ‘Soul’d Duets,’ which has received incredible positive response from listeners worldwide.

I’ve also had the pleasure of executive-producing projects for several artists, including Kenyan artists Kwame Rĩgĩi and Ayrosh, and have co-production credits on Kenya’s top female rapper Wangechi’s EP ‘Don’t Consume If Seal is Broken.’

The recent celebration of my 20th anniversary in the music industry has been a significant milestone for me. The celebration event was a moment of pride, bringing together fans, supporters, and industry stakeholders from both Kenya and the US.

What truly sets my journey apart is the community I’ve built—supporters who consistently show up, promote my music, and push my brand forward, just as I do for them. I’m proud to see the growth of all the artists I’ve worked with and to witness the impact of the years of dedication and passion I’ve poured into my craft.

Is there anyone you’d like to thank or give credit to?
Yes, I have several people I’d like to acknowledge who have supported me throughout my career.First, my parents and extended family, who have been there every step of the way, especially my wife, who helped me purchase my first keyboard.

EJ Jackson is another key individual; he challenged me to learn the piano, which led to my first studio production placement. EJ later became my mentor in music composition, production, and performance.

I also want to thank my college professor Gilbert Pryor, my academic advisor and music teacher at Bowie State University, for his guidance.

Next is Kaysha, a fellow musician from whom I’ve learned—and continue to learn—about the music business.

My longtime collaborator, Giggz, has been instrumental in refining my music and elevating it to international standards in post-production.

Jay Mukasa has been crucial in establishing the legal framework for my brand and label.

My manager, Edna Sangaka, has streamlined many aspects of my business and helped me advance to the next phase of my career.

Lastly, I want to thank all the artists, musicians, and fans who have supported me, collaborated with me, believed in me, and helped push my music career forward in countless ways.
