Rising Stars: Meet John Garcia of Dallas

Today we’d like to introduce you to John Garcia

Hi John, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
when i first got into photography, i was 13, and using my iPhone 4, taking pictures of everything you can think of: the sky, cars, flowers, walls, etc. so that i could have a cool tumblr feed. i continued that a few years after that, but it was strictly a hobby for me. i didn’t post any pictures i took, i just did it for fun. it wasn’t until covid when i started considering doing photography as my career. i always loved it, but i always wanted to take the traditional route of going to college and getting degree. once we went into quarantine, all of that just fell apart for me. so, i spent my grad money on a camera and in the 4 years since then, I started shooting my friends and then people from instagram, to models at wallflower management. i’ve been working really hard to make a name for myself and also have gotten to meet and work with very talented people.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
in the beginning it definitely wasn’t smooth road because i think, as a creative, it’s sometimes hard not being overly critical of everything you create. that’s been the hardest part. in addition, burn out is something i am trying to get a better footing on. i luckily have really great friends who are very supportive of everything i do and that has kept me motivated to shoot more and push myself.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
i am a self-taught photographer and i specialize in editorial and fashion. i would say what i’m known for & what sets me apart, is my bright colors and vintage editing style. i’m most proud of the relationships i’ve built with my models and all the great shoots I’ve gotten to do, I have met some really great and talented people.

Do you have recommendations for books, apps, blogs, etc?
I like to listen to random podcast, but some I like are anything goes, emergency intercom, and Kendall rae on YouTube for some crime. I listen to a lot of music when I feel inspired, I have a playlist specifically for right before a shoot and it’s a lot of manifesting/hype music that kinda put me in focus.
