Today we’d like to introduce you to Olusola Balogun
Hi Olusola, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
By trade, I am a board certified emergency medicine physician and enjoy EVERYTHING about working in the ER. I went to medical school and did my residency training in Chicago, IL. My husband and I moved to DFW about 8 years ago. Over the course of my 12+ year career, I have worked in county hospitals, rural settings, pediatric facilities, community hospitals and more. I really enjoy what I do. The ER is the catch-all and safety net for this country’s entire healthcare infrastructure. I get to really impact people on (sometimes) the worst day of their lives. For many individuals, their first encounter with a healthcare professional occurs in the ER. This provides a unique opportunity for us as emergency medicine practitioners to not only treat immediate health issues but also to educate and promote health literacy. It’s this ability to make a direct impact by providing crucial health education during critical moments that inspired me to pursue a career in emergency medicine. Unfortunately, ER physicians took on a fairly large chunk of the burden that is COVID-19. Burnout became very prevalent and many docs significantly cut back shifts in the ER or completely left emergency medicine all together. I didn’t want to leave emergency medicine but I also did not want to succumb to the stress of post-COVID hospital operations. So I decided to take patient care into my own hands and venture away from the protocols, metrics, micromanaging, and “treat ’em and street ’em” that hospital administration imposed on emergency room care. I started XPRESSDOC DFW, a mobile immediate/acute care practice that brings comprehensive care straight to the patient’s home or preferred location. This has allowed me to to spend more time with patients and treat/manage them comprehensively. Starting my own practice has awakened a robust entrepreneurial spirit that I didn’t know I had. It has also given me back the autonomy I always wanted in my medical career, allowing me to spend time with my family and put some focus back into my own health and wellness.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
My journey has been anything but smooth. One of the biggest struggles I faced was during the COVID-19 pandemic, which put an immense strain on my career, my family, and my overall health and wellness. The relentless demand in the ER during that time was overwhelming, and it led me to question whether I could continue in emergency medicine. The constant pressure and stress took a toll on me, both physically and mentally.
To add to the challenges, shortly after the height of the pandemic, I was diagnosed with breast cancer. This diagnosis was a profound wake-up call. My career had become such an integral part of my identity that I neglected my own health, overlooking early signs and symptoms. It was a humbling realization that, while I was dedicated to saving others, I had been neglecting to take care of myself.
These experiences were pivotal in reshaping my perspective and ultimately drove me to change my career path. They underscored the importance of balance, self-care, and the need to prioritize my own health so that I could continue to care for others effectively. Starting my own practice became not just a career move, but a necessity for creating a more sustainable and fulfilling professional life.
Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
XPRESSDOC DFW is a concierge mobile urgent care practice that is fully equipped to manage most acute non-life-threatening conditions. Founded by a board certified emergency medicine physician, the goal is to address the challenges of navigating a complex healthcare system for acute medical care. Recognizing the frustration when primary care appointments are weeks away and ER wait times are lengthy, there is a need for middle ground. While traditional urgent care facilities often fulfill this need, our mission is to enhance and elevate acute care further, making it not only timely but also comprehensive, personalized, and exceptionally convenient.
XPRESSDOC DFW focuses on value-based acute care for non life-threatening injuries and illnesses.. We are committed to delivering comprehensive wellness, all within the comfort of your home or preferred location. Embracing a concierge approach, our practice goes beyond addressing acute concerns. Unlike traditional acute/urgent care facilities that often offer only what is deemed medically necessary, we adopt a broader scope of practice based on our level of expertise. This allows for a wider range of medical care options, surpassing the conventional standards of urgent care. Services that we offer include IV infusion therapy, medical procedures (e.g. laceration repair, abscess drainage, ingrown toenail removal, EKG, blood work, mobile imaging, wound care), fracture management, and much more.
We operate as an out-of-network provider for most insurance plans, which is why we follow a self-pay billing model. Our pricing is designed to be comparable to an ER co-pay, offering you the benefit of receiving ER-level care for acute, non-life-threatening conditions right in the comfort of your own home. This approach provides a convenient and high-quality service at a reasonable cost. Additionally, many health plans offer out-of-network benefits for emergency or urgent care. To support you in pursuing reimbursement from your insurance, we provide itemized billing statements. We also accept HSA/FSA payments, making it easier for you to cover the cost of our services
What sets us apart is that our concierge-driven model ensures seamless access to a fully trained, board-certified physician every time you seek acute care. This prioritizes personalized attention and expertise throughout your medical journey, emphasizing the involvement of a highly qualified physician in your care.
Are there any important lessons you’ve learned that you can share with us?
The most important lesson I’ve learned on my journey, especially as an emergency medicine physician, is that you can’t pour into others if you’re not filling your own cup first. During the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, I pushed myself to the brink, constantly prioritizing patient care over my own well-being. This led to burnout, which made me realize that to be truly effective in caring for others, I needed to care for myself first.
This realization was a turning point for me. It inspired me to start my own practice, where I could create an environment that prioritizes both patient care and the well-being of healthcare providers. By focusing on self-care, I’m better equipped to deliver high-quality care to my patients. This lesson has been crucial not only in my personal recovery but also in shaping the ethos of my practice, ensuring that I provide compassionate, sustainable care for both patients and providers alike.
