Hi Roxanne, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
After losing my mom to cancer in 2021, I felt lost and dealt with anxiety and depression. I disconnected from my loved ones, including close friends for quite some time. After being one of my mom’s caregivers during her battle with cancer, I struggled to find purpose after her passing, I took one year to heal and understand my grief. In 2023, I slowly started to tap back into the activities I used to enjoy like hiking, dance, and fitness. I also began to surround myself with inspiring entrepreneurs and ambitious women, who became close friends and eventually inspired me to start my own business. With their support and guidance, I reflected on my strengths and work experience, leading me to launch my virtual assistant side hustle in January 2023. This new path has empowered me to help fellow entrepreneurs tackle tedious tasks while they focus on their passions. Launching this business has given me a renewed sense of purpose and it has motivated me to tap into my strengths even further.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Losing my mom during the pandemic was a devastating experience, and the grief that followed was overwhelming. The emotional turmoil left me empty, confused, and in disbelief. I was uncertain about how to cope, I felt guilty for wanting to resume my normal life and pretend nothing had happened. When I tried to do so, I was hit with an anxiety attack. For instance, three months after my mom’s passing, I attended one of my favorite dance socials, only to experience my first anxiety attack, which made me hesitant to return. Through therapy, I came to understand that I wasn’t ready to move on; I needed to grieve. Everyone experiences grief differently, and for me, it meant sitting in silence and stillness. It wasn’t until a year later, after patiently working through my grief, that I began to rediscover myself. I started exploring new hobbies like hiking, traveling, and taking different styles of dance classes. I realized that trying new things and forming new connections was essential to finding a fresh start and moving forward in life.

With over 10 years of administrative support experience, primarily in higher education, I decided to leverage my skills to become a virtual assistant. My goal was to create a flexible side hustle that I could manage from home, offering services such as general administration, event planning, and graphic design using Canva. With a strong desire to continuously learn and grow, I’m eager to develop new skills and adapt to clients’ evolving needs. My expertise in Canva has been particularly in demand, with clients seeking my help to create visually appealing social media graphics, flyers, and more.
