Conversations with Mariah Garza

Today we’d like to introduce you to Mariah Garza

Hi Mariah, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
My name is Mariah Garza, I’m an independent stylist in Oak Cliff. Since my Sophomore year of high school I knew I wanted to attend cosmetology school. College was never a dream of mine but I always knew the beauty industry was something I wanted to pursue. I attended Aveda institute just days after my high school graduation, I originally had no interest in doing hair and thought I wanted to be a
makeup or lash artist but quickly found my passion for hair after a few months of attending. After graduating Aveda I continued my journey at Lounge by Meraki where I have been for the past three years. With my fiancé being in the military I’ve been lucky enough to work and grow my experience in North Carolina and soon in Hawai’i!

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Definitely not, I’ve faced many struggles during my journey. I didn’t have the best experience in school, I had a teacher or two who made me feel like I couldn’t make it in this industry. I wasn’t able to grasp on to information the way the other girls in my class would and struggled all the time to the point where I was ready to drop out. Even though I felt becoming a hairstylist wasn’t for me I was still very eager to learn and applied for my first assistant job. I was so excited to finally be in a salon environment but my experience there was not great. After a few months of working there and graduating school I felt like it was finally time to assist somewhere new, I interviewed at multiple salons but still felt like none of them were for me. A little while after I came across Lounge by Meraki and instantly knew that this would be my salon home, I went in knowing absolutely nothing but my mentors Joana and Estela helped me every step along the way, If it wasn’t for them I would not be where I am today.
I temporarily relocated to North Carolina in 2023 due to my fiancés military duty. Adjusting to a new state and starting a new clientele came with many challenges. Within a week of being in North Carolina I landed a job at a local salon and after having a horrible experience with the salon owner, I realized that opening my own suite was the best way to build a strong client base, once I made the move my business quickly flourished.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I specialize in reds, coppers, balayages and layered haircuts. I take pride in all my work and strive to give my clients the hair of their dreams. My reds and coppers is what I definitely feel like I’m known for, it took me a lot of practice and effort to perfect my technique and formulations .
