Meet Philip Smith

Today, we’d like to introduce you to Philip Smith. Philip was introduced to us by the brilliant and talented Aaric Mychal.

Philip, can you walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
Hello. My name is Philip Smith and I’m a content creator based out of Jacksonville, FL.

My journey thus far has followed a few different paths. First, I did stand-up comedy for about ten years. I started out here in Jacksonville before moving to Dallas, TX. In Dallas I became a working emcee at Hyena’s Comedy Club. That was an incredibly rewarding experience and taught me a lot about the world of stand-up comedy. After a few years in Dallas I returned to Jacksonville where the comedy scene is certainly much different. While I still enjoyed performing, my drive and motivation had certainly shifted.

In 2018, I shifted my focus to the growing world of podcasting. My pop culture podcast, “The Wait For It Podcast”, has actually been featured on Voyage Jacksonville. My co-host (Eric Serna) and I are approaching year seven at Wait For It and have been very fortunate to partner with several Florida based anime/pop culture conventions such as Bold Matsuri in Jacksonville and Brick City Anime Festival in Ocala, FL. We serve as moderators for Q&A panels with various guests, primarily from the world of anime, including titles like Demon Slayer, My Hero Academia, Chainsaw Man, and many more.

I also have a Jacksonville Jaguars podcast titled “Touchdown Jaguars!” with my co-host James Johnson. We’ve cultivated a solid following within the Jaguars fan base and have had the honor of covering two NFL Drafts and a regular season game from the Jaguars press box as credentialed media members —achievements we are very proud of. We’ve interviewed guests such as Jaguar QB Trevor Lawrence and Jaguars legend Maurice Jones-Drew.

My next venture has been stepping into acting/voice acting. Because of my exposure to the voice acting world via the conventions we work, I found myself interested in exploring that world a little more. While I’ve only taken a few classes at the time of this interview, I have hopes that voice acting could be something I could really excel at!

Let’s talk about your work and career – what else should we know?
Interviewing people about what they’re passionate about, whether it be on one of my podcasts or in the Q&A panel setting, is definitely my favorite thing to do. I really enjoy crafting a conversation with a guest and speaking to them about what they love. I also really enjoy performing in front of a live crowd. Stand up comedy offers a really unique euphoria that really can’t be replicated. So even though I’ve moved on from pursuing that particular passion, I still enjoy getting on stage every once in a while.

Aaric Mychal has been a great friend to us and I know you’ve got a great relationship as well. Maybe you can tell our audience a bit about Aaric and your experience with them.
Aaric and I have known each other since high school. I will always credit him with helping me get out of my shell and being more comfortable with who I am.

He’s meticulous when it comes to his work so I knew when we needed an intro for our Jaguars podcast (Bleav in Jaguars), I knew he would be able to cook up the perfect sound to match our energy. At that time we were also with USA Today and the Bleav Podcast Network, so we only wanted to work with the very best.

While we’ve always been more or less interested in different things when it comes to our professional pursuits, creatively we’ve always matched each others drive.

It’s why we briefly worked together on a podcast, but unfortunately life got in the way. But I certainly hope we can get back to it one day because I truly believe it had really great potential.
