Community Highlights: Meet Alexia Brown of Lexibgolf

Today we’d like to introduce you to Alexia Brown

Hi Alexia, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I was introduced to the game of golf at a very young age. I grew up watching my older sister and dad play regularly and they encouraged me to tag along. My dad was military and we would spend time practicing at a local municipal course called East Potomac Golf Links in Washington D.C. When my dad retired we moved to Phoenix, Arizona where I enrolled in several other sports but quickly chose to focus solely on golf. I played for my high school team Xavier College Preparatory and after four years of junior tournaments and high school matches I signed with Portland State University to play four more years in College.

After graduating I moved back to Arizona and began working with a junior golf organization called The First Tee of Phoenix. It was there that I realized I loved to teach and that Instruction would soon become a passion of mine. During my time at The First Tee I built a strong foundation of skills that helped me become a better communicator, problem solver, listener and creator. All skills that are needed to provide a successful private and group lesson environment. I spent 4 years at The First Tee of Phoenix and my fifth year I decided to part ways and continue my teaching career in Austin, Texas.

Balcones Country Club was my next stop for 2 years. At this private facility I worked as a Golf Instructor that focused on creating Programs for women and juniors. I also began my journey to further my education and teaching credentials through the LPGA Teaching and Club Professionals Association. Going through my LPGA Certification helped me understand how to fully connect with a student, and how to approach their swing from a mechanical stand point if needed. My time at Balcones ended in 2019 when I received a call from the Director of Golf at Monterey Peninsula Country Club in Pebble Beach, California.

My role at MPCC shifted from Teaching Professional to Assistant Golf Professional. I still had the opportunity to teach but my focus was Golf Operations. It was an experience that I will never forget. From the spectacular views of the Pacific Ocean to the two beautiful and challenging courses on property. Working there I was able to explore tournament operations, high end customer service, merchandising and most importantly creating relationships with Members. Golf operations was a side of the industry that I wanted to experience but it was not my passion, teaching was. I wanted to go back to teaching full time. By now I had a long term relationship and we were looking for a fresh start. We knew Dallas had year round golf and was a great place to further my teaching career. So off we went!

Indian Creek Golf Club. would be my next location. While I was there I went through my last level of LPGA Teaching and Club Professionals Certification, and focused on building programs for beginner golfers and juniors. During my time at Indian Creek GC I learned to market and use social media as a platform to increase participation.

While my story may appear seamless going from one place to another, it was not. I went through a lot of challenges as I navigated my way through this male dominated field. All while having two conditions called Endometriosis and Adenomyosis. They are both extremely painful diseases. Lesions and abnormal tissue attach to organs in the body and wreck havoc on you mentally and physically. I did come to a point in my career where I did not know if I could continue to teach. I had a lot of self doubt, I was emotionally drained and physically I wasn’t able to stand on the lesson tee for more than a couple of hours. I was in pain and could not push myself to become the best teacher that I wanted to be. Because of this I left Indian Creek Golf Club and started my healing journey.

Developing a business that you are passionate about is a difficult task, but if you love it enough its worth the challenges. I am now located at The Golf Ranch in Richardson, TX and I have created an amazing Program called Women’s Weekend Clinics. Almost every Saturday of the month we work on fundamentals consisting of Full Swing, Short-Game and On course play. I wanted to create an environment where women can feel comfortable being a beginner. Golf can be an intimidating sport especially for a woman getting started. The Golf Ranch welcomes all skill levels and creates a fun and laid back atmosphere. As I continue to build my business it’s important to me that my clients always feel welcome and continue to be curious about the game. Golf is changing and I am excited to see the progress. Lexibgolf was created for those who are afraid and have no idea where to start, along with others looking to take their game to the next level.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
The road has had several bumps along the way for example:

My health
Self doubt
Building brand relationships
Navigating a male dominated field
Generating enough revenue to buy training aids, golf clothes, equipment, accessories
Lack of Diversity within the Golf Industry specifically black women.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
I specialize in teaching golf to beginner adults especially women. I am known for being a patient, kind and motivating Instructor. I create a welcoming and safe space for my students so that they feel ready to learn and have fun.

I believe what sets me apart from others is how I approach each lesson. I truly get to know each student as they navigate through the learning process. It’s important for me to understand their background. For example, if they were an athlete or had preexisting injuries. People play golf for numerous reasons whether that be for family, social outings or competition. I enjoy asking questions because I can better understand how the student learns which then leads to better results.

As a brand I am most proud that I have created a space where women can feel empowered, encouraged and excited to learn the game of golf. I show women it is possible to have fun at a golf outing, whether it’s for a law firm, corporate entity or financial group. My clinics and private lessons help women feel more confident on and off the course.

If you had to, what characteristic of yours would you give the most credit to?
Determination and Patience – Establishing a business takes time and there will always be trials and tribulations. It’s very important to remain patient and determined in building a future for my business. It takes time to create a name for yourself.

It’s also imperative to have patience while on the lesson tee. Learning how to play golf can be frustrating, students are more likely to remain calm and feel more comfortable through the learning process if they see how well composed their Instructor is.
