Conversations with Kenny Dreams

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kenny Dreams

Hi Kenny, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I go by the name Kenny Dreams. I always wanted to be a rapper growing up, I felt I had a unique story and point of view that hip hop hadn’t heard yet. Growing up in a Nigerian household, my father passed away when I was four years old. My mother and I moved from the back and forth England-Nigeria to Dallas, Texas the following year before I started Elementary School. I consider myself a Texan and country man through and through. Fast-forward to when I was graduating Military High school in Indiana, I got into NYU last minute as a spring admit, and I was so thankful. I always wanted to live in New York, and have an opportunity to pursue a music career.

It was at NYU my freshman year, second semester 2019 I met my best friend and business partner Iz LaMarr. We matched each other’s intensity and entrepreneurial mindset and we both wanted to show our talents throughout the city. I only had a couple weeks of freshman year before the world-changing Covid Pandemic happened and everything closed.

When we came back for sophomore year everything was different, the access to performances shut down and there wasn’t opportunities for upcoming artists like myself to showcase their talent. That Sophomore summer going into Junior year Iz and I decided to go to Washington Square and start performing. We had a small community of friends and family but we didn’t realize what would happen from these shows.

After performing in Washington Square at the heart of NYU three separate times, Iz LaMarr and I started our event company “Roaring20s Events” in New York. Throughout college we were able to build a strong community which has stuck with us till present day. While at NYU we expanded our event business to LA and Berlin.

“Roaring20s Events” is a platform for artists to grow and build their community, performing at various hip hop parties and events.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It definitely hasn’t been a smooth road. In our first official year of “Roaring20s Events” my junior year, we threw over 40+ events, the following year our team underwent changes, as some of our peers had school obligations and “real jobs” they had to focus on. Senior year went a little slower, we had strong events in the fall but in the winter our team divided. The final straw to the camels back was our Valentine’s Day Party 2023. We didn’t get the turnout we expected and we knew then we had to take a step backward

By Gods grace, by the end of 2024 we were able to find new team members that have taken us into this new phase of success. Fellow entertainers like the one and only DJ Synthefire and our Hypeman JohnElite, became family and we have formed the greatest hip hop group of our generation; “Roaring20s”.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I’m a rapper and producer from Dallas, Texas. I’m a very skilled writer and vocalist, the first thing that sets me apart from my peers is my strength in beatmaking and producing. I love sampling records of the past and making it the future. The second thing that sets me apart from others is my entrepreneurial mindset, I don’t like waiting on opportunities to present themselves, I’d rather make them myself. I founded the event company “Roaring20s” with Iz LaMarr in 2021 as a platform for artists and communities to grow with one another. Every single event we’ve ever thrown we perform at.

What do you like best about our city? What do you like least?
I love Dallas, it’s home. I love the space the most, living in NY full time now, I really appreciate this in a different type of way. I love the flat lands and the open-air of our city, I love the nature and the people. I don’t dislike anything about our city but I wish people would be more open to collaborating and building something within our city than elsewhere.
