Life & Work with Kris Dew

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kris Dew

Hi Kris, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I’ve been modeling for 5 years, acting for 2 years, and recently started working behind the camera. I got started with modeling right before Covid, had built my portfolio and was submitting to as many agencies as I could. Lockdowns happened and I pretty much had to start completely over once things were roughly back to normal. After lockdown I faced frustration with the industry because things were slow and many agencies weren’t looking to sign new talent. In October 2022 I gave a last ditch effort into getting signed, I was signed to my modeling agency and within that same week I was signed to my acting agency as well. Since then I’ve worked hard to branch out and work every aspect of this industry

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I faced so many struggles and hurdles and I still do to this day. A lot of the rejection I face in the modeling world stems from my height, there’s still many casting calls I’m not allowed to attend, and many of the calls I am allowed to attend my height is still seen as a flaw. I overcame this by focusing on what I could change and that was my skill as a model. I leaned into what drove me to this industry and that was my creativity. I reaffirmed what I loved about this industry and it was my passion for art. I recognize no matter how far I go there will be obstacles and that’s part of my pathway but I can’t imagine being as happy in any other industry

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
Im a commercial model, actress, influencer, and occasionally 1st assistant director. My bread and butter as of late has been UGC ads. I’d love to do more editorial work and I feel this is where I specialize, but I recognize rarely, if ever, is editorial work paid. I’m most proud of the runway work I’ve done in the past, they stand as a testament that I can overcome any obstacle. I think what sets me apart from others is my unwillingness to give up even when things can seem bleak

What quality or characteristic do you feel is most important to your success?
Previously I’ve said my drive is the most important characteristic I’ve carried for my success, but as I’ve matured in my career I’d say the ability to self reflect has become much more important to me. I can drive and grind as much I’d like but without the habit to look at my work from the standpoint of a 3rd party, I’m not going to go get anywhere with it. An ability to look at my work and recognize points where I can improve has made the biggest change in my career.
