Rising Stars: Meet Jack Jackson of Downtown Dallas

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jack Jackson

Hi Jack, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
My journey began in childhood, as I have always felt a strong connection to art, both literally and figuratively. However, it was in 2006 that I realized I wanted to pursue a career as an artist. Growing up in Monroe, Louisiana, my options for activities were limited to sports and typical childhood pursuits. With all sisters in the family, I had to discover my own interests, which led me to explore art. I focused on drawing graffiti and anime particularly inspired by cartoon shows and real world things around me. This passion drove me for a while, but over time, I set it aside. I was influenced by the belief that artists typically struggle financially, often only finding success posthumously. Consequently, I redirected my efforts and pursued a bachelors degree in mechanical and drafting engineering from The Grambling State University. I have now been working in the engineering field for the past eight years, and I suppose some positive outcomes have emerged from that choice.

Moving to Dallas in 2017 played a significant role in reigniting my passion for art. It was during this time that I first picked up a paintbrush, something I had never done while growing up, as I primarily focused on sketching and drawing. I decided to explore painting and discovered that I had a knack for it. I began experimenting with various styles, starting with abstract art and gradually moving into contemporary forms. This journey allowed me to study different art movements and expand my knowledge.

Over time, I believe I found my niche—those subjects and themes that resonate with me the most. I enjoy creating and observing how others interpret my work and what it means to them. Ultimately, I feel that my true purpose lies within the art world, where I can express myself and connect with others through my creations.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Has the journey been completely smooth, absolutely not. l’ve experienced a roller coaster of emotions, from happiness to sadness, while navigating the challenges of entrepreneurship, questioning whether I’m doing what I should be doing right now.
However, I’ve come to realize that it’s all part of a learning experience, overcoming obstacles such as learning to run a business, being an entrepreneur, and keeping a business afloat. How do you maintain momentum during difficult times when the initial excitement wears off and business slows down? Is this really what you want?

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I identify as a contemporary artist, specializing in abstract and contemporary art with a strong graffiti influence and bold use of colors. My creative process involves combining disparate styles and movements, drawing inspiration from everyday life and reinterpreting familiar elements in unexpected ways. This approach often prompts viewers to ponder the thought process behind my work, sparking curiosity and interest. I strive to create art that feels dynamic and urban, as if it’s jumped straight off a subway wall, infusing my backgrounds with a sense of energy and spontaneity.

We all have a different way of looking at and defining success. How do you define success?
My definition of success is becoming a globally recognized, full-time artist. While I may not need to achieve Basquiat’s level of fame, I aspire to create art that resonates with people worldwide, living authentically and virtuously, and sustaining myself through my craft. I envision leaving a lasting legacy that inspires others, especially those from similar backgrounds, to realize that anything they desire is attainable, and proving that with dedication, everything is within reach.
