Community Highlights: Meet Nekima “REPOCHIC” Horton of RC Consulting Group and HelixCheck

Today we’d like to introduce you to Nekima “REPOCHIC” Horton.

Nekima, known as “REPOCHIC” is a sought-after coach and consultant for her experience and expertise in Organizational Development, Program Development, and Grant Preparation. During times of economic, political, and social uncertainty like the time we’re now in, most people will depend on their jobs, put their dreams on the shelf, and forget about their passion to serve. They choose to go back to their safe place of comfort. But for the bold ones – for the interrupters among us – there is another option… To be a REPOCHIC/MAN and TAKE BACK what you have lost or given away. Those who choose this path will learn how to grow their vision and expand their mission with Nekima. As the President and CEO of RC Consulting Group, she works with businesses of all sizes and disciplines. Empowering companies to get structurally and programmatically organized. As a game-changer and system-buster, she is educating entrepreneurs on their options.

She is the CEO of HelixCheck. HelixCheck is a mobile-based testing agency with the capacity to mobilize and conduct vital public health activities across the country. These activities DNA testing and HIV, and STD testing through the newest department, HelixClinic. They are currently working on testing with the feasibility of producing a facial recognition match with legal confirmation of relativity by DNA.

Nekima’s passion is in entrepreneurship. She was also the founding President and CEO of the Veterans Coalition of North Central Texas (VCNCT), the largest, of such an organization, helping Veterans across the country. The VCNCT had 85+ organizations under the umbrella of the Coalition. They worked together to strategize and identify best practices for local, State, and National mythologies and program development. She believes helping those who have served is the most rewarding gesture she can make. The “Gap Filler in services to Veterans, their families, and Veteran Service Organizations.” It was at this time she added service to Veterans and their families to her portfolio. Being the daughter of a WWII Veteran, service was in her blood! Her father served honorably in the US Navy. This desire led her to Mental Health America of Greater Dallas, where she became the Director of the Operation Healthy Reunions program. Here she focused on the mental health state of returning Veterans, from all eras, and their families. It was here she built the Veterans Coalition of North Central Texas. She attributes the success of the Coalition to working in excellence, networking, collaboration, and most importantly staying focused on the mission and service before self!

Ms. Horton has a proven track record in business and program development, designing, grant writing, community organizing, and organizational development. She works with for-profit companies but loves the non-profit sector. She started her career in the school system in the state of Louisiana, working with elementary, middle and high school students, identified as at risk. She then transferred to the largest charity hospital in Monroe Louisiana. Working in the Social Services Department of the hospital, Ms. Horton was thrust into the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina. She also worked part-time at a geriatric’s clinic. Leading group sessions with seniors was some of the most memorable education she had received. While she enjoyed her work, she knew she wanted to have more of a voice in program development.

It was her work in tobacco cessation that brought Ms. Horton to Texas. Prior to coming to Texas, Ms. Horton was the North Regional Director for the Louisiana Campaign for Tobacco-free Living. Adding tobacco cessation to her focus on building healthy communities was a welcome addition to her work. In 2009, she was hired by the University of Texas at Arlington to take the campus tobacco-free. She enjoyed her work but still felt like she had more to develop and give. As the campus moved forward with her recommendations, becoming smoke-free in 2011, she went back to her passion of direct community service.

These are just a few of Nekima’s professional highlights. Ms. Horton has consulted with multiple agencies, community initiatives, churches, non-profits, for-profits, and individuals interested in building their programs or building a business. A member of the National Small Business Association from 2020-2021. She has been recognized as a 2018 Woman of Empowerment, Motivational Speaker, 2017 Emerging Leader, 2016, 2017, and 2018 Game Changer for the 3rd, 4th, and 5th Edition of the Who’s Who of Black Dallas, and a member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Inc. Ms. Horton received her Masters of Social Work from Grambling State University and Bachelors of Science in Sociology, minor in English, from Louisiana Tech University in Ruston. “Learn all you can then go build your own, then learn more and help others build,” she says. “If you knock and a door doesn’t open, then bust it down or build your own door” is her motto. She is the proud mother of three beautiful adult children.

She attributes her success to her faith in God, her loving mother and father, and her amazing FAT kids.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
The road has definitely not been smooth but that is a part of entrepreneurship. Was I ready for that road, absolutely not, still ain’t ready! I did not set out to be an entrepreneur. I wanted to be a corporate lawyer. I left my corporate career and went into the non-profit world, working with Veterans and Veteran organizations. This is where I started my first company in 2011, it was a non-profit. I grew it to be the largest Veterans Coalition in the country. It took me to the Pentagon and the Pentagon to me. I could have never imagined that it would turn into a national model. I also never imagined it could also be my demise and lead me to one of the worst depressions ever. I shut it down in March of 2020.

During that time, I went into the for-profit world. I started my mobile testing company, HelixCheck, in 2018. In 2019 I took on a partner and a contractor to help me launch. While I thought I was building a team, they were working to steal my company from me. Before I figured this out, 2020 and COVID-19 hit first. While trying to pivot, I found out my “partners” took $20,000, and locked me out of my site. It took me over a year to get my company back.

During both of these situations, I went through a divorce, lost money, partners, friends, and almost my home and definitely sanity…But GOD! Running the Coalition for 10 years was my purpose and developed me into a Leader I never imagined I would be. It was one of the best and worst experiences in my life! I am rebuilding my mobile testing company, launched a consulting agency, and a VLOG I did with my friends in 2020 has now turned into a real talk show, “REPOCHIC” picked up by a TV network. Crazy how things you thought would literally kill you propel you into your destiny, your next chapter, and perhaps even next book. As an entrepreneur, you have to hang in there, push through, take an “L” (lesson), cry, regroup, cry again, and keep going. “Don’t let the process punk you out of your purpose!”

Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?

What’s next?
Plans for the future are to expand across the globe empowering entrepreneurs, with a focus on women! I want our impact to be on both the non-profit side and the for-profit side.
