Today we’d like to introduce you to Elly Salamanca
Elly, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I was born in Nicaragua and moved to Washington when I was just 13 years old, which was a significant change for me. During my high school years, I found my passion for powerlifting, which taught me about strength, dedication, and discipline. Despite this newfound love for lifting, I always dreamed of running a half marathon, even though I used to dread cardio.
In April 2023, I finally took the plunge and signed up for my first half marathon, sparking the beginning of my running journey. To keep myself accountable and motivated, I began sharing my progress on TikTok, documenting both my struggles and achievements along the way. I desire to change the stereotypes surrounding runners and show others that they can be runners too, regardless of their background or fitness level.
Now, as a chiropractic student, I’m deepening my understanding of the human body and how to promote holistic health. I’ve also been navigating the challenges of polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), which has made weight loss difficult despite my efforts in both exercise and diet. My faith as a follower of Jesus serves as my foundation, guiding me through life’s ups and downs and reminding me that every step I take—whether in the gym or on the pavement—is part of my larger journey.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The journey to where I am now definitely hasn’t been smooth. Growing up, I hated cardio and never saw myself as a runner. One of the biggest struggles I faced was not just the physical aspect of running, but the mental battle of overcoming the stereotypes I had about myself—that I wasn’t built to be a runner.
In the beginning, I was slow and often felt discouraged when I compared myself to others. But instead of letting that hold me back, I decided to lean into it. I started posting videos on TikTok to hold myself accountable and share my journey as a ‘slow runner,’ embracing where I was and the progress I was making. The support I received from the community helped me realize that running isn’t about speed—it’s about showing up, being consistent, and finding joy in the journey.
There were times I wanted to give up, especially when I faced setbacks like injuries or self-doubt. But I’ve learned to push through those challenges, and each step forward, no matter how small, has made me stronger. Now, my goal is to inspire others to believe that they, too, can be runners, regardless of their pace, body type, or where they’re starting from.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I am currently a Chiropractic Student Intern. I really enjoy treating patients and diving into the rehabilitation aspect of Chiropractic! I aspire to work with athletes and help them perform to the best of their ability!
I, also, enjoy sharing my running journey with my TikTok community! Excited to share my next half-marathon journey!
What quality or characteristic do you feel is most important to your success?
My perseverance is definitely strengthened by my faith in Jesus. I believe He has a purpose for each step of my journey, even in the challenges. Leaning on the Lord gives me the strength and peace to keep going, especially when things get tough. My faith reminds me that I’m never alone, and it helps me see every experience as an opportunity to grow closer to Jesus and fulfill the purpose He has given me on this earth. In everything I do, I want His name to be known and glorified.
