Hi Anna, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
Anna & Madison have been best friends since Pre-K, over 20 years ago. Both studying business & marketing in college at the University of Arkansas (Woo Pig!), we always knew we wanted to start our own business together one day. An opportunity post-graduation presented itself when a family friend expressed needing a website for their business. We jumped in and started polishing our skills in website design and SEO. Through word of mouth, we kept growing & expanded our services to include visual branding and paid ad management. As we continued in the space, we saw some gaps in the marketing landscape, especially for small business owners. You’re expected to run your business full-time or as a side hustle, and be a marketing guru? That’s asking a lot, for anyone.
jo + leigh marketing was born in early 2022 to fill those gaps for service-based small business owners, offering a full suite of services for digital marketing so that small business owners can get back to running their businesses & focus on their strengths! We currently work in all sorts of industries and with all kinds of businesses.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Of course it has not been perfect over these last few years, but we have learned so much from every experience! We have had some face-palm, funny-after-the-fact moments while learning all things owning your own business (like that time we set up our bank wrong and accidentally paid our first set of clients… hahaha), and some struggles we face as young female entrepreneurs not getting taken seriously. Choosing when to expand our business in the form of hiring, essentially entrusting our brand to somebody new, is also another struggle we’ve had to learn how to navigate. We knew from the start we would always put our friendship first and it has never caused tension or stress to this day, since we both are working towards the same goals!

Our purpose is to remedy the business owner’s tiresome cycle of yelling in the void in attempts to get real marketing results. We hear about these problems all the time, which is why we started jo + leigh marketing! We get help for the areas of our company that aren’t our strong suits – and we want our clients to be able to do the same – so when it comes to marketing their business, we want fellow entrepreneurs to trust us to take the reins and get them the success they desire.
We’re known for the passion we put behind our work and our client’s business to get them to dominate in the online space of their industry. How do you think about luck?
A little bit of both in our business! Our family friend who needed a website, which sparked our initial foray into the website-designing world, is where we definitely feel the luckiest since it propelled us into our line of work. More importantly, it opened our eyes to how much of a gap there is in the current marketing landscape. I mean we always thought, there’s a million website designers and digital marketing agencies… it’s too congested for us to make our way in! But when we started talking to people about their past experiences with other marketing companies, we just realized we had something really special to offer to small business owners. We also consider ourselves incredibly lucky to work with each other as best friends!! Knock on wood, but no bad luck has come knocking on our door that we couldn’t overcome, and we have our incredible network of family, friends, and mentors to thank for that.
