Check Out Illyana Morales’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Illyana Morales

Hi Illyana, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I previously started working for Starbucks in 2019. I had a good enough expierence that when I left for 2 yrs I considered to return to Starbucks when I needed something to fall back on. I returned to Starbucks in 2021. The pandemic greatly showed how Starbucks really treated their employees, or their partners as they like to calls us. Our hours have been cut back. They say we’re over staffed and yet we can’t find coverage for when someone calls out sick. We’re over worked. I myself am a partner with a disability. The mental and physical stress does affect me. Starbucks says they’re for partners with disabilities, but we are put in situations that don’t hold up to that statement. I actually don’t even like the position thar Starbucks has placed their management in. Management is very much mistreated and can’t speak up for themselves. All these reasons brought me to consider the union as another option for help. I could have chosen to leave Starbucks, but it would not get rid of my issue of people being taken advantage of.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Talking to the union was nerve wrecking to begin with. They made it very easy to follow their process, but I was nervous I was getting myself into something way too big for myself. I guess I doubted myself too much. I had a lot of mental obstacles, but my coworkers helped me throughout the process and continue to do so.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
When it comes to work I spend my time at my cafe only store.
When I’m home I’m relaxing with my husband and two cats.
My own projects would include my vlogging videos on my youtube channel under illyana morales cook.

Let’s talk about our city – what do you love? What do you not love?
I really like to see the diversity of the city. I feel more comfortable around different individuals who come together to make something great happen. I am dissapointed in the increase of the homeless population. Rent continues to rise. I know I have my struggles making sure I pay my bills. I use to work in Fort Worth and would see the homeless on streets or in the hospital where I worked. Now the homeless population has greatly increased Hurst where I live.
