Hi Emelia, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
The journey of SlayedLocks began out of a deep love for beauty and a passion for helping others. I spent 17 years working in healthcare, specifically in Oncology clinics, where I witnessed firsthand the emotional toll that hair loss could have on patients undergoing various cancer treatments. During that time, I developed a deep understanding of Oncology and the impact that losing one’s hair can have on self-identity and confidence. I found myself not only providing medical support to patients but also guiding them through the emotional journey of coping with the changes in their appearance.
It was there that I began to fuse my passion for hairstyling with my desire to support those dealing with hair loss, teaching patients how to adjust to their new norm and embrace their evolving beauty. What started as offering tips and wig styling blossomed into a more profound calling. I began dedicating my Saturday mornings to meeting patients at wig shops, guiding them in finding wigs that closely matched their former appearance and helping to restore a sense of normalcy and confidence.
After leaving the healthcare field, I decided to pursue this passion in a new direction by launching SlayedLocks. My goal was to create a space where everyone—whether coping with hair loss or simply seeking to express themselves—could feel seen, celebrated, and empowered. SlayedLocks became more than just a place for hairstyling; it transformed into a platform for healing and personal transformation, offering a uniquely tailored experience for each client.
Today, SlayedLocks continues to grow as a brand dedicated to diversity, creativity, and self-expression. Whether assisting cancer and alopecia patients dealing with hair loss, or creating a bold new look, my mission remains the same: to help people feel amazing inside and out. I’m excited to continue this journey, blending my background in Oncology with my passion for styling wigs, and bringing comfort and confidence to each person I have the privilege to work with.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
The journey of SlayedLocks has been far from smooth, with numerous obstacles along the way. One of the significant challenges came after I became the first certified wig specialist in Texas in 2020 in over 20 years, only to see the state deregulate wig specialty licenses on September 1, 2021, when House Bill 1560 was signed into law. This change made it easier for anyone to claim expertise in wig services without proper training, potentially lowering the standard of care for individuals coping with medical hair loss.
Additionally, there has been a growing issue with insurance coverage. Several major insurance companies have stopped covering cranial prostheses’, which are custom wigs designed for those experiencing medical hair loss due to conditions like cancer or alopecia. This shift has made it more difficult for clients to afford high-quality wigs, especially when dealing with the financial strain of medical treatments.
Despite these challenges, SlayedLocks remains committed to providing personalized care and support, continuing to advocate for the highest standards in the industry, and finding creative ways to make services accessible to those who need them most.

I absolutely love reading books that inspire personal growth and resilience. One of my all-time favorites is *Americanah* by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie. It’s a profound exploration of identity, race, and love that resonates deeply with my own journey as a business owner and encourages me to reflect on my experiences and the diverse backgrounds of my clients, which is vital in creating a brand that celebrates individuality and empowerment. Her work inspires me to stay connected to the stories of those we serve at SlayedLocks. Another favorite is “The Power of Now” by Eckhart Tolle. It emphasizes mindfulness and living in the moment, which is essential for navigating the ups and downs of running a business.
