Meet Furqan Sunny Azhar of DART Sports

Today we’d like to introduce you to Furqan Sunny Azhar

Hi Furqan Sunny, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
DART Sports began in 2016 as a backyard style Sunday football meetup. In true backyard style fashion, we would show up, draft on the field and play ball. However, as the group began to get more popular, we began to crave rules, structure and predictability. So, I formed a “Committee” to help in developing a rules sheet that would continue to evolve. We began to draft prior to Sunday’s game, so teams could strategize with each other. We developed a structure wherein 4-8 teams would compete on a Sunday in a mini tournament format.

As the popularity grew, so did the talent. Therefore, DART Sports then began to enlist teams into local sports leagues, including football, basketball and tennis. We found success, but we also saw our fair share of losses. Those losses made us hungry though, and through it all, we found joy in the journey and the brotherhood. We support each other not only on the field, but off the field too. As husband, parents, sons and as professionals, we continue to grow through with the support of our DART brothers.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
While it has been a labor of love, it has not always been a smooth road. There were moments where the competition was so intense, that our members would bicker and argue. In these situations, we have had to develop rules to attempt to reduce this, but we also try and work with those members who find difficulty in staying composed in the heat of battle. We talk to them as a committee and help to resolve issues amicably. Most of the time though, better judgment does prevail.

The majority of our members have full time jobs and juggle family life with their involvement in DART Sports. We truly are a brotherhood, and that may mean that we play football on Sunday morning, league basketball game Sunday evening, practice on Tues, and then play a league football game on Thursday night.

As a result, many of the wives secretly, and parenthetically sometimes not so secretly, express their annoyance with the level of involvement that their husbands have in DART Sports. It continues to be a struggle to find a balance between family life, professional life, and DART Sports.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
By training, I am an attorney practicing exclusively in corporate immigration law. I have been practicing immigration law in Allen, TX for 17 years, but we represent people all over the world.

Part of my practice includes the representation of companies in their visa needs, but also individuals who may need visas. For example, we represent people who are seeking visas as an alien of extraordinary ability in athletics, including bronc riders, cricketers and mixed martial artists.

In terms of your work and the industry, what are some of the changes you are expecting to see over the next five to ten years?
The Dallas sports scene will continue to blossom and grow. DART Sports will continue to have a home in the DFW area as we will expand into more sports. The relationships that have formed among are members are the kinds of relationships that last a lifetime. When you are in the trenches with someone, and you win or lose, you form a bond that cannot be broken. You may fight, you may argue, but you will always have a shared experience that will never be lost.
