Today we’d like to introduce you to Courtney Jackson
Hi Courtney, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
Courtney “Goldie” Jackson, a native of Raeford NC, has come a long way from helping her father on the farm. Goldie has worked with some of Hollywood’s biggest stars, traveled the world as a stand-up comedian, and helped to serve our nations veterans & at-risk youth in her community. She was raised a farmer’s daughter in a small town but dreamed of the big city and bright lights of Hollywood CA. Serendipitously, she decided to follow the path of acting and comedy and eventually moved to Los Angeles CA. After two months of auditioning, she landed on VH1’s top rated show The Flavor of Love (Season 1) with Public Enemy’s hype man Flavor Flav. She became an instant reality show favorite! Goldie has worked along performers such as Regina King (This Christmas, Film), Martin Lawrence (Showtime’s Martin Lawrence Presents, TV Show), and Billy Dee Williams (Shacking Up, Stage Play). As well as performing stand-up, Goldie has written for It’s Your World, a segment of the popular radio show “The Tom Joyner Morning Show” and has been an on-air host for Showtime & VH1. Goldie has been a feature and headlining act in comedy clubs all over the country and introduces audiences to her witty, observational, and hilariously physical comedic style each time she touches the mic. Goldie is currently a mental health therapist and the host of a weekly Instagram Live show titled Goldie Interviews (@goldie_98) as well as co-host of “Find The Funny” podcast. Goldie lives in Dallas, TX and performs regularly at clubs such as The Improv & Hyenas. Goldie continues to dazzle Flavor of Love fans and social media followers in her interviews with comedians, musicians, and other leaders of the culture.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Losing my mother at age 14 was tragic & trying to figure out how to be a woman without one to model was extremely hard.
After moving to LA at age 25, I struggled with the best ways to “make it” & often felt insecure around those who were training in theater & acting. Stand-up became my outlet & my way to explore my talent. However I became famous way before I got funny so comedy at times felt like an uphill battle. My father was not supportive of my career at all & made me feel bad about moving so far away from home. Living in LA was tough & it took several of us to make rent; sometimes falling short. Also the industry doesn’t often respect reality tv personalities for having talent; so then there’s that to combat.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I’m a licensed therapist (LCSW) along with doing comedy so I’m pretty busy. I’ve been doing clinical practice for over 7 years & work primarily with people who struggle with anxiety, depression, childhood trauma & the LGBTQ community. I’m most proud of helping others out of dark places through therapy & comedy because I know what that’s like. I think my relatability & sense of humor set me apart from others in my field.
We’re always looking for the lessons that can be learned in any situation, including tragic ones like the Covid-19 crisis. Are there any lessons you’ve learned that you can share?
I’ve learned to value everyone in your life! We often get too busy for family & friends but during a crisis we realize that those are the ones who will have our backs no matter what.
