Meet Payton McDill of Stray Design Studio in Oak Cliff

Today we’d like to introduce you to Payton McDill.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I’ve loved design and all things computer-related from a young age, but was told over and over that “a business degree was the only way to go!” Being a contrarian, I thought no. I disagree. So I dipped my toes in all the different waters I could find- service industry, sales, kids gymnastics- but I always came back to my first love. I ended up leaving a job that no longer served me well with the intent of joining an agency but… well, I decided I’d rather give it a shot on my own first.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
It has not been smooth! The hardest step is taking the first jump- will I get clients? Am I even going to be able to do what they need? You put your professional reputation on the line when you make a big leap, and it’s scary! With a history of working scheduled hours, with scheduled tasks, for specific people, learning how to be accountable for my own time and progress has been probably the hardest struggle since making that initial leap into self-employment.

So, as you know, we’re impressed with Stray Design Studio – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
I am a web and graphic designer specializing in creating a branding focus for small businesses, primarily in the health and wellness industry. Working with the owner of a company who has a brilliant business, but needs to learn how to grab clients, is something that I take tremendous pride in. I know how hard it is to start a business, and I want to do everything I can to make other small business owners stand out in their field. I think what sets me apart is that my passion isn’t for paychecks, it’s for progress. Creating something from nothing (whether it’s a logo, artwork, a website, a brand persona) is thrilling to me and I am truly excited for each work I produce with my clients.

So, what’s next? Any big plans?
Just to keep on growing! The clients I’m lucky enough to work with today are all so amazing, and I’m looking forward to expanding the network of similar-minded business owners with a passion for growth. I’d like to be able to spend more time working on some “moonshot” projects with textile design and surface pattern design, and I have some fun personal projects in the works for the retro fashion industry.
