Daily Inspiration: Meet Cynthia Villalobos

Today we’d like to introduce you to Cynthia Villalobos

Hi Cynthia, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
As an accountant, I found the profession didn’t completely fulfill me. I have a deep well of
creativity that comes from finding beauty in people, objects, and situations, and I always wanted to explore this side of myself. I have a knack for selecting and showcasing beautiful items, which I’ve expressed in my personal style. This led me to frequent fashion, vintage, and independent markets for inspiration and unique finds. While I appreciated the insights into business operations that accounting provided, I yearned for something more. Unfortunately, the pandemic left me dealing with long-term COVID, which limited my ability to work, exercise, and engage in many activities I enjoyed. During this challenging three-year period, I had the chance to reflect deeply. I took on managing a salon and boutique in the Bishop Arts District, where I began sourcing products and creating narratives within the boutique. In my search for unique and exclusive items, I discovered a wealth of untapped creative talent among small to medium-sized brands. These brands focus on sustainability, handmade artisan products, and diversity rather than mass production. They hold strong missions and values, creating beautiful items with integrity. This insight inspired me to create Femm Collective, a platform to showcase these innovative and emerging brands. I believe today’s consumers are discerning and value brands that resonate with their personal beliefs. My goal is to offer a unique and engaging shopping experience by highlighting these meaningful and creative brands.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Yes, of course there have been many challenges. I was diagnosed as a type one diabetic when I turned 21. The diagnosis makes everything more challenging but never stopped me from doing the things I love most. I wear an insulin pump and manage to make this part of my style and fashion. It is simply part of who I am and my favorite accessory . I believe my insulin pump is like any other piece of clothing I wear, it means something, it tells a story and an interesting one. I try to interpret the challenges that life brings to us as opportunities to do something great.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
When I grew up, choosing a creative career was not an option. Therefore, I went to college and got a business degree. Although I enjoyed it it was not fulfilling. It took 20 years of playing with my creativity and talent before I decided to change gears in my late 40’s. I’ve come to understand that in order to do authentically what you want you need to be okay with making a fool of yourself sometimes.

What makes you happy?
One of the things that brings me the most joy is connection. I really enjoy the experiences and moments created when I connect with my family, friends and clients. I believe one of my strengths is seeing the beauty in people that they cannot see for themselves. It brings me the upmost joy to tap to someone’s essence and show them how beautiful they truly are. Furthermore, dancing, working out and smiling are some other things that make me happy.
