Rising Stars: Meet LaPorscha Turner of Dallas

Today we’d like to introduce you to LaPorscha Turner

Hi LaPorscha, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
First, I want to express how honored and humbled I am to share my story with your audience. I thank God for this incredible opportunity to reflect on and share my journey.

I was born and raised in Dallas, Texas, spending most of my childhood in a small town called Hutchins. It was there that my love for both art and real estate came about. My parents were huge DIY-ers and would often take my sister and I along on their many trips to Home Depot. As a kid I was always drawn to the bright lights in the fixture department!

Both of my grandmothers on each side as well as my mom were seamstresses, and this later became an interest of mine as well. Right into my teenage years my mom became a single parent and did the best that she could to provide the necessities for my sister and I, however there were seasons where we went without lights, hot water and wore hand me downs. My desire to sew came from lack, because we just simply didn’t have it financially. The first shirt that I made was out of a cheap sheer fabric because I had no idea what kind of fabric to get being a newbie. Lol I’ve always been artsy and drawn to what some might call “old lady hobbies.” Recently, I’ve developed an interest in pottery as well. Fun fact: I made the dress I’m wearing in the picture included in this article!

In my early twenties I bought my first home, which was a huge milestone. Years later, as inflation rose and my income didn’t, I found myself on the struggle bus. That financial strain led me to investing in real estate as a way to create additional income. I prayed for guidance and strategy, and after I learned what I could do with my equity- oh it was on!

While trying to tap into my home’s equity, I faced a few roadblocks in the approval process. Frustrated, I questioned God. “Why is this so hard for me? Why isn’t this working?” I vented (in my head) while riding in the car with my sister. I happened to look out of the window and I saw a homeless man lying on a mattress on the ground. That moment humbled me deeply. Here I was upset about not being able to get an investment property, yet this man didn’t even have a roof over his head. It shifted my perspective entirely.

That humbling moment ignited a passion for serving the unhoused. Soon after, I began working with a charity called Angels of Mercy: God’s Hand, God’s Feet, alongside my “work family”—friends I met through my job. Together, we provided food, clothing, and other essentials to those in need. It’s incredible how my passion for real estate opened the door to another: serving the unhoused. God is amazing like that!

In 2020, I purchased my first investment property and have acquired a few more since. These investments gave me financial freedom, and as a realtor, I desire to help others achieve the same.

This road to entrepreneurship hasn’t been easy as there have been lessons, detours, and challenges. I understand the work required in this season, and I’m committed to serving with purpose and intention. I’m thankful to have had the support from my family and what a few of them would say “sweat equity” while on this journey. They have really come through for me, and I don’t take their support for granted!!

I’m a woman of faith who loves God and has a passion for art, real estate, and serving the unhoused. My journey has been one of growth, humility, and discovering how my passions can be used to uplift others.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
When it came to real estate I hit a few bumps initially because I didn’t have the right systems and processes in place. I’ve learned to do it right the first time to alleviate a headache in the future. I’m so thankful for my dad and uncles who have always helped me with repairs of my properties, I couldn’t have done it without them. Also I’d be remiss not to mention those who have supported me emotionally: my mom, my sister, Mr. Fred and my cousins within our bible study group.

Mentally I used to have limiting beliefs, I took it upon myself to change the way I viewed myself and what I was capable of. My church, family, therapy and God of course all contributed to this new mindset.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I am a realtor who also has investing experience, and I believe this is what sets me apart. I’ve had a passion for real estate for many years and I believe my work in this field is to help others overcome generational poverty via real estate investing.

If you had to, what characteristic of yours would you give the most credit to?
I believe integrity is one of the best qualities a person can have. It’s something that can’t be bought but truly treasured when you come across people who possess it.
