Today we’d like to introduce you to Terry Lee
Terry, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
In June of 2023, I was let go from my corporate job. At this job I made the most money that ever made in my life. When I was let go, all of that was taken away and I didn’t have a back up plan. When that happened, I said to myself “ I will never let a job/company have that much control over my life and wellbeing again. I do remember while I worked in corporate america, I was always stressed out and didn’t have a work-life balance.
While receiving unemployment and looking for another job, I started painting and doing creative designs to my walls such as batten board. Batten board walls are very popular and the designs are beautiful but I wanted to do something different. Then, I decided to take a class to learn how to do different techniques such as decorative painting, faux design, venetian plaster and other textured designs, After I completed the class, I applied for my LLC and T.Lee House of Walls and Design was created.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It has not been a smooth road. Being a business owner is truly difficult because I do everything myself such as marketing, social media, networking, supply ordering, inventory, invoices, etc.
When I first started it was so difficult to get clients and it’s very easy to get discouraged and I started to doubt myself and ask myself, “why is no one reaching out to book me”. Even my friends, family and acquaintances would not book to me. I stayed prayed up because I know I have a great product that I’m offering and not everyone can do what I do. So, I continued to push through and I finally got my first client!!
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I am a decorative painter/ faux designer. Most people don’t know what faux design is, but faux design is a decorative technique that uses paint and other materials to mimic the appearance of high-end materials such as marble or stone. I offer decorative techniques to create unique, high-end designs for your walls. I specialize in textured walls such as crocodile patterns, glass beads (looks like glass crystals on your wall), venetian plaster, stencil designs, batten board and custom canvases.
The thing that sets me apart is it’s very few people that does the different technique and skills that I know how to do. I offer many techniques that caters to a wide range of people. People don’t realize that they want or need my service until they see my work.
In terms of your work and the industry, what are some of the changes you are expecting to see over the next five to ten years?
Faux design will be more popular within 5 years. More people are wanting custom wall design, custom furniture, custom canvases, etc. because more people desire things that are original now. Outside of my personal clients, I also partner with interior designers as well and create beautiful wall designs to compliment their projects. Faux designers can not only do walls, but we can create beautiful custom wall canvases and cool furniture design.
