Life & Work with Michael Lamb of Uptown

Today we’d like to introduce you to Michael Lamb

Hi Michael, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I moved to Dallas to work with the DDB group, working as a designer and Flash animator to help establish the internet side of their new digital agency, which would later become Tribal DDB. At Tribal DDB, our client list was amazing: PepsiCo (Pepsi, Mountain Dew, etc,), Frito Lay (Doritos, Cheetos, etc), American Airlines, Air Force and more. After a layoff in 2009, I landed at TM Agency, working again with American Airlines helping create digital ads, which then led to being recruited into leading the web ad team at JC Penney Corporate in 2011 to 2014, ending in another layoff.

Tired of being laid off, I decided to become a full time freelance Graphic Designer. And last year an old friend and I started a sports branding agency of our own called LGND. So far we have gained many awesome clients, including the new women’s soccer club, Dallas Trinity FC, where we produced their photo, video, and some social media content for their first ever Media Day!

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
No it has never been smooth! The graphic design world is very competitive, and to be honest, I wasn’t really that good of a designer when I was fresh out of college, so I ended up focusing more on web animation. But eventually web standards changed and animation on websites went away, so I pivoted back to graphic design. I cringe at what I created in those early years, but I practiced and changed my attitude and style. I feel very confident about my work now.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
Logo and Brand Identity creation are my favorite aspects of design. Creating an identity for new business or helping an establish, modernize, or upgrade an existing brand is a great feeling, especially when I see my work being used in the real world on signs, menus, or merchandise.

I think what sets me apart from others is my foundation in hand work. What I mean is that I almost always start my concepts on paper with a pencil. This takes my eyes off of a screen and back into the real world of physical space. It may seem like a paradox, but I actually work faster this way as well.

What makes you happy?
I put in a LOT of hours, so just relaxing with my record collection brings a lot of joy. Record covers and posters are half of the reason I went to school for graphic design, so I guess even then I’m still in the world of design!

Pricing:

  • Logos can start as low as $1000 but scale up to $10000 depending on the client and complexity
