Today we’d like to introduce you to Kumiko Griffin
Hi Kumiko, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I was born and raised in Japan, where I met my husband and moved to his hometown of Chicago. We then relocated to Dallas-Fort Worth and have two sons and two dogs. I have been making handmade jewelry for over ten years and have been a vendor at numerous indoor and outdoor arts and crafts fairs.
I was lucky to find a welcoming place for artists to meet and sell their artwork in the Deep Ellum area of Dallas. My creations are original and inspired by my experiences in the world and the diverse people I’ve met. I select the stones for my work; each creation is unique and handmade. The colors represent the essence of my life and the beauty found in nature.
I’m very passionate about my work and grateful to have a supportive family. I have met many wonderful people, and my small business shines in the bright city of Dallas. My passion for jewelry has taken me from Japan to Dallas.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Throughout my journey, I have encountered several struggles. Specifically, the standstill caused by the global pandemic negatively affected many businesses, including mine. Additionally, at some events, I have faced contempt because I’m an Asian woman, and English isn’t my preferred language. However, I have met many event organizers, incredible artists, and wonderful visitors who have treated me kindly and respectfully.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
Since I make and sell handmade jewelry using gemstones, I am a registered buyer of gemstones. I go to the gemstone shows and choose and select the best stones. This is an incredibly joyous process, and seeing new stones makes me envision new designs. Next, I make the jewelry in my workshop through trial and error. This process is challenging, requiring multiple attempts, but my focus brings me peace, allowing me to sit at my desk for hours. When I have finished making a piece, I feel content and grateful.
Each jeweler has a different style and aesthetic. I am proud that my jewelry is art I create from my life experiences. I traveled to many countries in my early twenties with my childhood friend. After that, I worked for a travel agency and lived in Kenya and Egypt. What sets me apart from others is that I have met people from all backgrounds and cultures worldwide, inspiring me to create jewelry influenced by them.
How do you think about luck?
Sales come not only from my online shop but also from participating in various events. You can only attend events if a jury selects you, and when many artists want to participate, you may be rejected no matter how many times you apply. I feel disappointed whenever I’m not selected for an event.
Still, when selected, I feel incredibly fortunate and motivated to create new, original jewelry. I feel lucky to have good health during events, allowing me to stay energized while selling jewelry and meeting new people. What I am most fortunate about is my lovely family supporting me so that I can participate in many events. They understand my passion for jewelry, and I’m free to make new creations with much love and peace of mind.
