Today we’d like to introduce you to Missy Williams
Hi Missy, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
My first big event was I was ask to do a retirement party for my pastor for 600 people. I was not sure I could handle an event of that nature but I dug in and with help from my family and friends was able to pull it off. After that people from that event started calling me to do other events and it just grew from there. I would decorate the sanctuary, doing Christmas or Easter pageants and multiple shower or weddings. Everyone would recommend me to their friends for events and I realized I was good at hosting, planning, decorating, floral design and cooking. But before I started my career I would help my aunt at her church, and it just became a part of me wanting to do more. My first wedding was the Pastors secretary Mrs. Wells and from that my friends started asking me to help them with their child’s wedding etc. I then was able to get the River Oaks Lions club which got me into a whole different arena. Then I got the Keller and Azle Lions Clubs. After several years I got into Venues as their preferred vendor and my business took off. During all this time I was able to be at home with my two children and be there for them. In the beginning, I would teach myself the Art by reading endless books and articles, watching videos and going to classes to learn all I could about creating events. I spent countless hours practicing floral arranging, so each arrangement was perfect. During this time, I went to work for Albertsons/Tom Thumb as a merchandiser in the floral departments of 174 stores in Texas and Louisiana. By working there I learned so much about marketing a business, floral design and techniques, displaying and profitability. In my career I have had the pleasure of doing over 9000 events/weddings making peoples days so special. What makes it so “Special” to me is to do a wedding and then years latter do their child’s wedding. I like to incorporate the specialness in each wedding as if it were my own. Each wedding or event is different and that is what makes this career so rewarding. I look forward in continuing to make someone’s dream a reality.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
No way has the road to my success been a smooth one. Learning how to price and make a profit was the biggest struggle in my earlier years. I think the most tragic time I experienced was COVID. In the beginning I had to learn to be creative with what I had. As a new business I did not have alot of inventory so I had to learn to build from that. I had to learn to be resourceful. Although my business survived thru the hard times, I know many businesses that did not. If you were not able to pivot and be creative to salvage weddings/events during the COVID days you were not going to make it. I am thankful we MADE IT! My business is thriving, and I credit that to my awesome team.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I specialize in making their budget work with their dream. I am most proud of my customer service skills and ability to make their dreams come true. We are a one stop shop for a wedding. We do it all with the exception of a venue and the dress. We offer catering, floral design, decor, linen rentals, staffing, cakes and desserts, bartending, photography, coordinating, equipment rentals and much more.
Any advice for finding a mentor or networking in general?
I have found networking with Venues has been very beneficial to my success. Being true to your word and not lying to customers. I have found that social media has been very beneficial to my success. Every event I post on Social Media and from that I have received many new customers. I have found that being a preferred vender for a venue is most beneficial to the success of the business. I guess my greatest advice for anyone starting in the business is to not be afraid to dig in and work your own business. Noone can do it like you can.
