Inspiring Conversations with Abigail Molina of Abigail Molina Design

Today we’d like to introduce you to Abigail Molina

Hi Abigail, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
Ever since I was young, I’ve always known exactly who I wanted to be and what I wanted to do in life. Even as a child, I was entrepreneurial—I would resell my younger sisters’ toys or make jewelry and sell it at school. My mindset was simple: “If I can, then I will.” Little did I know that this attitude would shape me into an entrepreneur at an early age. I’ve always wanted to accomplish things on my own, and that sense of independence defined who I was growing up.

My passion for interior design blossomed when I started babysitting for an interior designer. She was everything I aspired to be, and the idea of transforming homes fascinated me. At 13, I started taking on small projects like redesigning my room, the bathroom, and the kitchen. My mom gave me the freedom to make our home my canvas, allowing me to work on my portfolio and explore my creative side.

As I gained confidence in my ability, I created a website to showcase my gallery and the services I offered. I taught myself how to do 3D renderings and learned about the installation processes for tile, marble, hardwood, and more. I knew networking was key, so I attended design conferences, made connections, and got hands-on experience with different materials to deepen my knowledge.

One of the aspects of design I found myself especially passionate about was creating custom furniture. I began designing and crafting marble end tables and coffee tables, blending elegant, luxurious materials with modern aesthetics. I loved the challenge of transforming raw marble into functional works of art that would complement the spaces I designed. These custom pieces became a signature part of my work, allowing me to offer something truly unique to my clients.

Once I felt ready, I began offering my design services to family, friends, and social media followers. My first significant project was working on a new house build, and thankfully, my networking helped me find the right people for countertops, wallpaper, and every detail involved in the process.

Now, at 19 years old, my interior design business has flourished, and I’m proud to be the owner of Abigail Molina Design, my very own design company. It’s been an incredible journey, and my business continues to grow rapidly as I take on bigger projects and serve more clients. I’ve built a brand that reflects my creativity, dedication, and passion for transforming spaces.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Being a young woman in interior design and project management, fields often dominated by men in roles like architects, builders, and installers, has been both challenging and empowering. Early on, I faced skepticism and had to constantly prove my abilities, as my gender often led others to question my expertise. As a project manager, I encountered additional hurdles in leading teams and asserting my vision in spaces where male colleagues typically held the decision-making power. Despite these obstacles, my passion for design and my commitment to creating impactful spaces pushed me to persist. I overcame these challenges by honing my skills, building strong relationships, and demonstrating leadership in both design and project management. Today, I am not only a successful interior designer and project manager but also an advocate for increasing female representation in these fields. I strive to create a more inclusive and equal environment for future generations of women in the design and construction industries.

Is there anyone you’d like to thank or give credit to?
I absolutely love this question! The most important mentor in my life has been my mom, Yulma Molina. She has always taught me to aim higher and never let fear stand in the way of my dreams. From as far back as I can remember, she has always worked tirelessly to provide the best for our family, and I knew I wanted to make her proud and show my gratitude for everything she’s done for me. She helped shape me into the woman I am today. Not only is she a loving mother, but she’s also a successful project manager for buildings across DFW and other cities around Texas. She shares the same mindset I live by: “If I can, then I will.” Her strength, dedication, and unwavering belief in me continue to inspire everything I do.

My second mentor would be my best friend, Sandra Porter, whom I met along the way. She is an independent designer with her own company, and she has been a constant source of guidance. Any questions or doubts I had, she was always there to help and reassure me that I could do it. I was initially scared to start, mostly because I feared my age would affect how people treated me, and I was unsure about how to run a business or price myself. But Sandra taught me everything I needed to know, and over time, I gained the confidence to branch out and take on large projects I never imagined I could do on my own. To this day, we stay in constant communication and often partner up on projects together!
