Today we’d like to introduce you to Niriam Martinez
Hi Niriam, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I started my journey in the beauty industry by being a freelance makeup artist at the age of 17. Slowly I started realizing that makeup wasn’t my true passion & I started diving into the barber world. I started learning how to cut hair by giving my little brother a haircut. Now I’m a Dallas female barber (still in school), and growing on social media. My love for creativity and the beauty industry has always been there. My desire to create a change in this world by making people feel special is what pushes me to further my journey. I now attend barbering expos, network with barbers across the world, and have barbershops looking to work with me. I seek to build a woman owned barber business in Dallas later on and look forward to building a united community with it.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I’m also a young mom, and the struggle to find a balance between being a single mom and pursuing my dreams has been difficult. Also I was tired of working at a job for 5 years that kept giving me false hope in promotion. I took the leap into finding something better by using my 2 week vacation time from that job to secure a second job. I was able to keep paying my bills and get some more money to start paying for barber school. I was working a full time job, part time job and going to barber school for 2 months straight. I am now debt free and pushing to further my career in barbering.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I’m a Dallas Female Barber. I use my shears and clippers to achieve different haircuts. I’m also able to do perm curls, bleach, color and style. I’m known for specializing in men’s haircuts, specially being a female in a male dominated industry.
Im most proud of how far I’ve gotten in such little time. I’m half way through school and I’m already getting noticed by brands, gaining a steady clientele and achieving better cuts.
I make sure my clients have an understanding of their own hair and leave with confidence. Giving quality cuts with a relaxing and personable experience instead of rushing with a clock is what sets me apart.
What has been the most important lesson you’ve learned along your journey?
The most important lesson through this journey so far has been to take control of your life. Like really visualize what you want and take true actions. We only have one and dreams should only become more and more real as we keep living.
