Today we’d like to introduce you to Michelle Gomez
Hi Michelle, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I was able to attend the Art Institute of Dallas, but decided to get a more hands-on experience in the Pastry kitchen at the Hyatt Regency at DFW Airport. After a few years, I accepted an internship at the Fort Worth bakery, Leah’s Sweet Treats, where I learned the art of customized cakes. It is more than just putting a cake in the oven. Each cake has its own identity and custom details that can be sentimental to the customer. In 2017, I had my first child and became a stay at home mom. I began to take orders for family and friends and then before I knew it, my Instagram took off and I had up to 5 orders in a weekend!
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It most definitely was a challenge in the beginning. I had to realize that not every order was for me. I am a people pleaser and found it difficult to say no to anything that I did not feel comfortable making. Lessons were learned and I now know my strengths and can stand firm in my decisions. And then of course, the current economy is a challenge in itself.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I specialize in custom cakes. I am mostly known for making children’s birthday cakes, but I am slowly transitioning into wedding cakes and Quinceanera cakes. I am most proud that the elements/decorations on my cakes are mostly handmade and edible, as it has become a trend to include acrylic elements or edible images on cakes.
How do you think about luck?
I believe that faith and hard work has led me to where I am today. I started at entry level positions and have always proved myself to be reliable and loyal to the job. I think that I have a good rapport with my repeat customers and have delivered on what they ask of me. That has kept them coming back and referring me to their friends and family.
