Exploring Life & Business with Misty Thomas of ETX Mystical Events

Today we’d like to introduce you to Misty Thomas

Hi Misty, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
My love for weddings began with my own. Over a decade ago, I started planning weddings and events for myself and my family, unknowingly laying the foundation for what would become my life’s work. My career started at a large corporation where I managed events for over 500 attendees, an experience that sharpened my organizational skills and gave me the confidence to handle high-stakes occasions.

When COVID-19 disrupted the world in 2020, I found myself at home with our four children, trying to navigate a new reality while searching for an income source. During that time, my husband (then boyfriend) was working as a flatbed truck driver for TMC. He was gone for long stretches of time, only able to come home on weekends. While it was a challenging time, his dedication to providing for our family kept us going, and his unwavering support helped me explore new opportunities.

I tried running an online business, but it never felt like the right fit. Then, in 2020, we got engaged, and planning our wedding for October 2021 reignited a long-buried passion. That process reminded me how much joy I find in crafting memorable experiences.

The turning point came in 2022 when I was asked to plan a fall festival at our church (Life Church of Longview) and my best friend’s wedding. Those events cemented my decision to start my own event-planning business. Since then, I’ve planned and executed close to 100 events, with half of them being weddings.

What makes this journey even more special is that my husband, a proud Navy veteran, and my best friends are now part of my team. Together, we’re not just creating events; we’re building lasting memories for our clients while making incredible memories of our own. It’s a joy and privilege to work alongside the people I love most, sharing in the excitement of helping couples celebrate one of the most important days of their lives. Every event is a “Happily Ever After” that we get to be part of.

The love and support from my family and friends keeps me going, but none of this would be possible without my husband. He is my greatest supporter, my partner in everything, and my rock. His hard work, dedication, and unwavering belief in me—both as a truck driver during a difficult time and now as a Service Technician Manager for Nelson Propane and a part of our business—have inspired me every step of the way. He’s extremely busy day in and out, but always makes time for me. My love for him is indescribable, and every success we achieve feels even more meaningful because we’re doing it together.

One of my proudest moments came recently when my business was voted “Best of East Texas 2024” for small businesses. I’m grateful for the recognition, but even more for the glowing reviews and love from my clients. Each event I plan is a reflection of my passion and dedication to creating magical moments for people on their most important days.

Looking back, I see how every step of my journey—whether working in a corporate environment, pivoting during the pandemic, or rediscovering my love for weddings—has led me to this point. I feel incredibly blessed to combine my professional expertise with my passion, all while building a legacy for my family, our team, and the couples we serve.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
It hasn’t always been easy. Learning how to manage a company on my own came with a steep learning curve—figuring out marketing, advertising, bookkeeping, and building a website from scratch. On top of that, I had to overcome resistance in the wedding industry as “the new guy.” Peer-to-peer jealousy and constantly having to prove myself, added pressure, and maintaining professionalism while navigating those challenges was no small feat.

All of this has been juggled alongside being a full-time mom and wife. With four kids—ages 16, 14, 11, and 6—life is a constant balancing act of after-school activities, family time, and supporting my children’s individual needs. Some days, it feels like there aren’t enough hours in the day, but I remind myself why I started.

Despite the challenges, my passion for creating beautiful events and meaningful experiences drives me forward. I’ve learned to adapt, grow, and rise to each obstacle, and every success feels that much sweeter knowing the sacrifices and hard work it took to get here.

What was your favorite childhood memory?
One of my favorite childhood memories is the time I spent with my closest cousin and my younger sister. My cousin and I were so close in age—just three months apart—that everyone thought we were twins as babies. We did everything together, from playing outside until the sun set to creating our own little adventures. Wherever one of us was, the other wasn’t far behind, and my younger sister was always right there with us, making our trio complete.

We shared so much laughter and mischief, creating memories that still make me smile today. Whether it was building sleepover pallets on the floor, disagreeing about stupid stuff or coming up with silly games, those moments of pure joy and togetherness shaped my childhood. The bond we shared was unbreakable, and even now, looking back, I cherish the closeness we had and the love that surrounded us during those simple yet magical times.
